Dragons Dogma Online is actually good and actually free, although it lacks a bit in MMO department since you have to gather a party in order to play with others. What I do like about it, however, is that it doesn't have generic "press 1, press 2, press 1 again while 2 is on cooldown" MMO combat.

It's not weebshit so you probably won't like it but I'm having a great time with Elder Scrolls Online since they overhauled it a year ago. Thought I had become too cynical and jaded to ever enjoy the genre again and yet somehow the game really sucked me in and keeps me logging in every day, motivated to do stuff, not burning out after over 6 months without break of 14 hours a day in it.
Combat has hidden quirks that make it rather complicated to master to push high dps in PvE or outplay other players in PvP, gear is mostly random stats but level scaled to your own (until you hit the level cap and farm your endgame gears) and you can make insanely weird and quirky builds as most abilities are tied to weaponry, armor or other skill lines like guilds or shit like vampirism.
It's mostly horizontal content due to level scaling and that means there's a ton to do - bit too much for my liking but I guess I shouldn't complain about that.
It's not free from flaws though (long loading screens, awful performance in large battles, barebone UI that needs LUA addons to make it useable) but still, it's rather wholesome if you enjoy this Elder Scrolls typical style of "run around and see where the adventure takes you".

You'll never have any kind of satisfaction from your grind because no one will ever think you got anything legitimately. Ever since WoW implemented the playtime tokens, I think that's been the case, yes. In doing so, they gave players an official way of trading money for gold, and with there having always been a market for raid spots, it made it so you actually could buy gear with money even in WoW. Just buy a raid spot from some top guild every week and collect your free epics. Thanks to the new loot system, the guild doesn't even lose any of their own loot because it's all personal.

I never played GW2 enough to know anything about its current endgame, and... isn't that already it for oldschool b2p MMOs? BDO hardly even counts with the fucking 9 dollar pricetag.

I've given up on finding an MMO and just took the Monster Hunter route.

I've tried several and I'm just not fond of cooldown row of ability combat system most MMOs have. Even when they tried to spice things up like Wildstar, it just wasn't happening. PSO2 is also nowhere near as fun as PSO so I couldn't really get behind it.

I heard Dragon's Dogma Online is alright but I'm too lazy to get around any chink shit requirements.
