I also had a similar issue with my DS4 where it'd register up/down alongside left or right dpad presses or the other way around which meant accidentally swapping weapons/items in Bloodborne when I didn't mean to.

Never had this issue with the DS3 unless I fat fingered it, and I knew when I did that.

Literally doesn't happen on any of my DS4 or DS3. Happened all the time on my shit fuck Xbox 360 controller, the controller with the worst dpad of all time so no surprise there.

Is this a defect? This doesn't happen to my Pro at all.

Happens on DS3 and DS4 as well though not as often. Trust me on this, I play fighting games with these pads and dashing which requires double tapping on either side sometimes becomes a jump when they're pressed too hard.

Pressing left and right quickly is not what causes the up reading.
What causes it is you being imprecise in your movement while moving left and right quickly because the d-pad is able to be tilted up or down from its left and right parts.

It has nothing to with fat fingers though, I'm pretty much a skelly. The issue is a single bit of plastic connecting all the buttons so if you press slightly off the center, the other buttons get tilted and register

It is widespread in the sense that all Switch pro controllers are like that because of how they're designed.

Easy enough fix if you cut out the raised ring on the rubber conductive pad. Can cut up a Wii U pro controller's rubber pad and swap it into the Switch controller.
