The problem with RE4 is that it's way, way too long. The entire village sequence is absolute gaming perfection, but Capcom ran out of ideas at the castle. I'd say the game gets progressively boring until the water room (my favorite part of the game), and pretty much never recovers after the maze.

I don't really understand it either, I played it for the first time 6 months ago and thought it was moderately good.
Nothing incredibly just plain good.
I guess solid games are exaggerated a bit to be masterpieces.

It inspired every shooter for the last decade. It was a big deal. I agree with the first poster that the game doesn't get better than the Village. The weapons get more commando like and less old timey, you fight super soldier guys with guns of their own, ammo just falls out of the sky. The game gets progressively worse, not better. Honestly, if the entire game was in the village, and the castle and the island were just places where certain bosses were, maybe a few rooms with traps, the game would have been much better. The village sequence plays like some weird, frantic kinda survival game in a rural backwater. The castle plays like some japanese guy's nightmare, and the island just comes off as a spy movie with monsters. There's a few exceptions, like the monster called "It" in the suspended cages and a few big open battles are interesting, but still. That being said, the game is still a 9/10 to me.

RE4 is also extremely overrated anon, and praised mainly because a lot of people started with it. But when you look into it, the game combines pretty much everything wrong with modern gaming, a trillions cutscenes all the fucking time, the longest escort mission ever, qte up the ass all the fucking time even during cutscenes, and turned a survival horror series into baby's first TPS action game with unlimited ammo and no zombies.

No, seriously. The novelty wore off after the third colossus fight, and the melodramatic twist at the end is so laughably overrated and not the least bit sad.

RE4's pacing is out of this world. It always knows exactly when to throw enemies at you or slow it down and let you explore an area. And everytime you're just getting sick of killing the same enemies they throw a different scenario or enemy type at you. It's long without wearing out its welcome, varied without feeling gimmicky and just challenging enough that you're always questioning what the next encounter will bring. I've beaten that damn game at least 12 times. I love it.

I fucking hated following the swords light to find colossi. The amount of times I got lost or were just running into shit because of the crap horse physics really wore me out. And the fact that there's literally nothing to do outside the boss fights makes the game feel really empty.

Been playing TES since Daggerfall. And just every TES had a huge impact on gaming and RPG, but none of them come close to the juggernaut that was Skyrim. EVERYONE knew Skyrim, EVERYONE played Skyrim, EVERYONE loved Skyrim, and RPG out there tried to be Skyrim.

There were many games that defines standards in their respective genre, like gears of war that turned every TPS into a cover based shooter, but Skyrim was on a a whole other level.

Bloodborne and the whole Souls series really. I played through a couple of them. But I never really see what's so adored? I mean, the locales are pretty and some of the earlier games have good secrets, I'll give it that. But in a proper studios hands, with these worlds and secrets, these games could have more proper AI and less buggy shit like pic related. Could actually be good fun. But you've got the "hard" marketers I guess that can't allow them to fix the games, because that would be "too easy" if shit didn't glitch you into a buggy grab. So alas, I wait.
