We barely connect to any of them. I only knew Biggs, Wedge and Jessie for maybe 3 conversations, not enough to care about their deaths.

Barret is a far less interesting character than I remember, doesn't have much to say and isn't really relevant to the plot after the first hour. I couldn't care less what happened between him and Dyne, I don't even know what the fuck was up with Dyne, nor why he randomly killed himself at the end. Tifa, Cid and Aeris are the only ones that actually mean anything and Cid still trusts you way too fast (literally after one conversation).

Aeris' death is literally the exact same as Aria in FFIII. Japanese fans probably didn't think it was sad but more of an homage to previous FF games. But westerners didn't play FFIII before so they thought it was sad.

I played FFVII shortly after it came out. Didn't like it much at all. Broken materia system, lackluster combat compared to other turn based games, annoying controls, pre rendered backgrounds were a pain to navigate, story was forgettable, etc.

Replayed it again last year just to see if I had grown out of my childhood bias. Turns out most of the same annoyances I had back then were the same. Except this time, I actually grew to like Tifa as a character. It has nothing to do with her tits but more that she is a caring, loyal companion. And I have a fetish for female brawlers.

What is incorrect about that statement? Pre-rendered backgrounds allowed for artists to express their world as they actually saw it, instead of being limited more severely by the technology of the time. If the buildings were rendered with the same graphical quality of the models it would have aged even worse than it has. Instead, it has become rather timeless. I'm no longer wowed by the models, either in battle or out of it, but I'm still drawn to the backgrounds.

I just had a full run through and finished last weekend. It was awesome. I replayed it a few times since launch but not all the way through but this time I fully completed it again. It's a great game.

Some things are a bit dated now and it's a little clunky where things have moved on a lot since then but it still holds up well. I won't deny the nostalgic feelings I had but there's nothing wrong with that and it doesn't cloud my objectivity.

And even with how far graphics have moved on in the intervening 20 years, some of those FMV's are still really special. Watching them again, especially the ones I hadn't seen for many years was amazing. Some of the more powerful summons later in the game are just awesome too. I love how overpowered you get with some of the later materia too, makes you really feel how far you have come through the game.

A real classic. Which absolutely holds up.

The problem is she's in a Final Fantasy game. A game where story is the focus. So having a character like Yuffie (or Khimari in FFX) that has basically nothing while the other characters get hours of dialogue makes them feel weak.

It's not like in Suikoden where you get 80+ side characters so you don't expect every character to have a strong connection to the story. But even in a Suikoden game, the vast majority of characters still got more development than Yuffie did. Usually a whole main story quest was devoted to them. Like this girl. Her only real role in the game was to get you to explore the school in one town. But that part of the story goes on for a good 2 hours and her role in the story adds some much needed development to one of the main characters, Flik. In this way, her role is substantially more developed than Yuffie and she doesn't feel like a throw away character.

The setting is one of the things. Though it seems a little closer than just both having a water theme. A lot of the outfit design and even the island hopping is similar to Cross.

I disagree. FF7 is a beast most different from all rpgs of this era. It was made at the peak of Square's jrpg mastery. They had all the right people there all at the right time, and on a console where their limitations had went through the roof. It's a one time happening that will never happen again until FFX. FF7 was a congregation of talent and passion. It was still just good enough that the dev team still cared about making a game and not just a product to sell for quick cash. All their development interviews and the ultimania shows this. Lightning of that magnitude cannot strike again without the right circumstances coming into play again. Did you even understand ATB system? There such thing as turn order exists, even though you can't see it. If enemies attack before you it means their ATB gauge filled and they queued their attacks. You should have played with Wait option, so you could just pick Item, Magic or Attack and wait until enemies' animations end.

It's also why it worked out for FFXV. While all the characters in XIII had different styles yet the same background, Noctis and his friends weren't too different from each other in terms of powers, had unique personalities from each other, and while they grew up in the same city their personal histories and personalities were fleshed out well and they complemented each other perfectly. The fact that they all wear black serves as a visual aid of the synergy of the group and how they have a lot in common. In FFXV, you truly got the sense that they were all best friends and basically brothers.

Also in VII, Cloud and his companions are all a ragtag group but their distinct backgrounds and personas combined with their mutual hatred of Shinra created a unique synthesis between the group (basically they are The Breakfast Club).

XIII's party made no fucking sense. They are a group that for all intents and purposes shouldn't be together. The way their party was formed felt shoehorned as fuck.
