Incredibly terrible management. Basically all our politicians set fucking records for corruption and while the management siphoned off all the money so that there was nobody taking care of the city and tensions were high, then all the jobs started disappearing. Basically the city just kept losing money and the situation kept getting worse. For a while it was REALLY bad and crime was rampant and good fucking luck getting a cop to do shit about it.

Nowadays it's really not that dangerous, there's just nobody here. There's literally not enough of a population to maintain any sort of dangerous crime. But we're making a comeback, there's a LOT of property that is dirt fucking cheap here now and people are taking advantage of it. Lots of artists are flooding into the city, lots of people interested in rebuilding and being a part of the comeback. Gentrification all around. We're even getting our shit together in terms of management, I'm actually fairly involved in the public transport part of it, we're trying to fix up the bus routes and put in options for people to commute.

But yeah, Detroit would be a great setting for Fallout for a lot of reasons. First off we still HAVE an industrial complex, it's just abandoned. Second there's a shit load of cultural icons here, from architecture to historical figures. Plus we got literally ALL of the freshwater. Seriously the great lakes make up like 90% of the WORLD'S freshwater or some shit.

There are a lot of neat landmarks you could play with and the potential for people to be using geothermal power exists. They could put the focus more on tribals and wilderness survival like Honest Hearts did and populate the park with smaller settlements so that we don't have to pretend an aircraft carrier with 20 people on it is a "city". Maybe have the main plot involve stopping the super volcano from going off.

However eventually Caesar would die of old age and if he hadn't planned a proper line of succession and created a functional political structure beyond his power as Dictator then the empire would fracture into smaller kingdoms lead by warlords.

If a functional political structure is built then they could take the whole continent in time.

I remember having mix feelings when Fallout announced the Pitt DLC. The thought that they created a entire DLC about my home town was amazing, but it was not really that good in my opinion, as well I had to pay for it.

I think a place in Florida would be cool. Fallout reached the everywhere in the US besides the South East.

I actually once planned running a fallout p&p game set in seattle.

The space needle would've been occupied by the service staff that worked there pre-war, the rich people that were there visiting managed to get into a vault and the poor worked sat at the top, just outside of the blast range and slowly got ghoulified.
