It's been a long time since I've played the first one so I don't remember if there are little quirks exclusive to that game, but I can give you a general run down on the series.

In each game for one reason or another you're on the planet that the Pikmin inhabit, and you establish a mutual relationship with them. They help you explore the planet and collect whatever objects you're there to collect and in return you help keep their species alive. You control a big group of Pikmin and order them around to attack enemies or carry objects, and you can carry the corpses of enemies back to the base to create more Pikmin. In the later games you have multiple captains so if you're good at multi-tasking you can split them up and do multiple things at once. The different colors of Pikmin each have special properties so you have to strategize on which you're going to use to tackle the current situation. Each game has a different approach to a time limit, the first one gives you 30 days, the second one gives you unlimited time, and the third one gives you time based on how much fruit you collect.

All of the games have amazing enemy design, they're all so weird that you really feel like you're on another planet.

It's surprisingly decent for an Arzest game but that doesn't really say much. That's just about the only standard by which it's good.

Pikmin 1 or 2? It's sort of like a puzzle RTS, you command a group of up to 100 pikmin of various colors to explore the environment and collect either the pieces of your crashed ship(1) or treasure to pay off your company's debt(2)

1 has more of an emphasis on time management and puzzle solving with a 30 day limit, 2 is more exploration and combat based with no limit on days and underground caverns where most of the game's treasure is located and time does not pass
