They kept 9S for the tradeoff that his active curiosity would always yield beneficial results. Making a more manageable android would reduce the effectiveness and amount of data obtained.

The end of Automata is genuinely a beautiful moment. It really got to me.

Never, Automata does a partically terrible job at making you care about any of its main characters. Pascal is literally the most human character in the game and his storyline is the only time I felt anything in Automata aside from things that weren't directly referencing the first game. 2B is a non-character, and just like A2 needs a lot of background material to be read by the player for them to even have character. 9S is just all around unpleasant screaming murder manlet. The game after Ending B is just watching a grade schooler go on a tantrum. Ending E Credits is great though, however Ending E itself was shit.

btw, do I really have to replay all story quests and sidequests every playthrough

9S doesn't remember anything but he's absolutely fine with dying for 2B because he loves her and on majority of his incarnations he didn't resist her or simply killed himself after learning everything
the fact 2B loves him too only makes it more difficult for her to continue her duty to a point she nearly breaks down and tries to kill herself but is stopped by 9S himself who asks her to promise him to keep killing him so they will stay together at least this way

Can't find it atm, but there is side-material in one of the novellias, Memory Cage or Orbital whatever that describes how each 9s is "different" with each re-release, based on experiences or memories collected.

It's one of the reasons 2B is so obsesed with preserving that particular 9S, despite it making various YorHa backups, because some 9S models only reclaim memories of "the bad times" they had together and all 2B wants is a 9S that maintains the "good times" they had together.
