I was at a namco concert last year. Sakuraba went onstage that one time and started doing an extended piano solo based on Gwyn's theme. And goddamn that touched me, it was so passionate and brooding, like a work of a madman balancig on the edge, really powerful shit. Best memory I've made all that year. I'm not sure if there are any recordings of it online, thought, it's from the Paris concert.

Speaking of Tales music, they're somewhat supposed to be generic anime shit and I can forgive that, even though I never played them and barely heard the soundtrack. Some of his other work in similar vein is really good thought, like Half Minute Hero's and ESPECIALLY Valkirye Profile, now that's some inspired shit.

I always had a mixed relationship with this one. I always thought it sounded absolutely dreadful until the 0:50 mark, similar to someone just screeching chalk down a blackboard in how bad it was.

Yet the more I listen to it the more it actually sounds quite genius. The first part of the song is arranged and played in such a way as to evoke the feeling of both mechanical contraptions and also fear - which makes sense because the mission was literally you infiltrating a castle full of scary wooden robot puppet things.

It's funny because while some modern musicians are able to do this, the vast majority of them can't.

It's unfucking deniable that when technology and culture began to propogate lower class music that the barrier for entry became much lower and music became valued in the same way that all other modern art is valued: for 'self expression,' and little else.
If we have a modern Wagner, Dvorak, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, or anything else that was half as amazing of any of them, I'd love to hear about it. But somehow I doubt that we do.
