If you don't know why I have to question if you were even playing video games 4 years ago. It was the heyday of Capcom pissing everyone off. First there were the botched games Bionic Commando 09 and Dark Void, then there was Mega Man cancellation after cancellation starting with Mega Man Universe which was set to be Mario Maker 6 years before Mario Maker leading up to the cancellation of Legends 3, trash games like Asura's Wrath (which was universally shit on at the time but now has some weird cult following I don't understand), Street Fighter x Tekken with 30% of the roster being on disc DLC and Bad Box Art Mega Man, the DmC debacle, and even going a ways back in time the closing of Clover and everyone from that studio leaving, it was the most people have hated Capcom at any point in time. You had developers for Capcom speaking out about how Capcom was mismanaging everything with Inafune being one of the forefront names in that regard. It was really easy to believe since everything Capcom was doing was so shit and even Inafune at the time was credible because he pushed the development of Dead Rising and Lost Planet which were two new IP's that people really liked and Capcom hated. It was the prime moment for it to happen, everyone was caught up in the fuck Capcom hype train and Inafune left the company because they wouldn't let him make anything and people wanted a new Mega Man game and Capcom cancelled like 3 of them. The marketing cycle ran itself and Inafune had all the good will in the world. He cashed all of it in for Mighty No 9 as well, so while he had a huge bargaining chip at the start, it's gone now.

i can explain asuras wrath, an executive clusterfuck caused a lot of the base gameplay stuff to be cut , and they had to rework it all from the ground up at the last second

as for why its got a cult following? dispite the lack of gameplay, its story and assets had a metric fuckton of work and love put in them, the characters were all written really well, and the premis and spectacle were both top notch. as ive always said, its a better anime than game.

the true ending being dlc was the devs accepting that there wouldn't be a sequel due to its flop, and just wanted to make sure that the story had actual closure to it while they still could.

So with Bloodstained having just turned undeniably disastrous, that brings the failure rate of devs (or character designers in MN9's case) trying to revive their baby in a new form to 100%. I backed Yooka-Laylee, backer's remorse after about two hours of playing. At the very best, I'll only back newer indie devs with an actual recently developed game to prove they're capable. I didn't back Shovel Knight, but I would back a sequel.

This is why if you back a videogame on kickstarter you need to make sure that the devs are competent and have a non-shit director.

It's Bionic Commando in 3D. That's literally the appeal. People shit on it for this or that reason but it's misguided because the things they get mad at the game for not doing are not Bionic Commando things. People complain that it's linear and not open world, but every Bionic Commando game ever is linear, people say the guns suck, but if you're playing the game as a shooter you're going to be disappointed because it's not designed like a shooter it's designed like a Bionic Commando game. It has some of the best if not THE best swinging in any video game ever, the level design is really strong in a lot of areas with a high emphasis on swinging and mobility, you can tell they really playtested the areas a lot to see where the needed to have swinging points, it's got really great arcadey action gameplay that the series is known for that gets really underappreciated because people expected third person shooter, unlocking abilities through in game achievements is great, the boss fights are really good there just aren't enough of them, the music is fucking great, it's way more solid than everyone gives it credit for. Does the story suck? Absolutely, they had to rush it which led to problems and chunks of the story are missing but in general it's just generic and not very well done. Should you write off the entire game because the story sucks? Absolutely not. The linearity isn't a problem in my opinion however there are problems in how the linearity is designed, namely the radiation which just sucks. Instead of invisible walls or something, if you stray too far out of the level there's radiation that just kills you. It's annoying but not game ruining and it's mostly an issue early on where the sign posting is particularly bad about it, but you shouldn't die to radiation more than a couple times. You also can't go back to levels you've already beat so if you're going for the collectables missing one means it's gone for that playthrough.

If you go into the game expecting an action platformer with guns, you know, a Bionic Commando game, it's really fun. Don't think of the pistol as a pistol, think of it like Strider's slash because you can shoot as fast as you can mash and in a lot of ways it becomes your primary "melee" attack and you'll probably like it more. Every level has special weapons that are like Castlevania subweapons that reward knowledge of the level and proper use of them. This combined with the swinging heavily rewarding skill makes it a game that gets better the better you are at it. It's a game that benefits a lot from multiple playthroughs which most people never put up with because they were frustrated with the game for other reasons. Also it's a fucking shame that the online died because it was legitimately one of the best online games I've ever played, it was death match and CTF where everyone is Spiderman with a gun, it was fucking crazy and incredibly intense. Everyone could borderline fly and you're trying to land shots without being too stationary and occasionally getting into midair grapple battles. It was a level of ridiculous that you don't get anywhere else.

Why Dina was hired was a rumor. But the fact is she was getting into flame wars with fans on forums for gender/political issues, and that is NOT her job. It's perfectly fine to hold any number of ideological positions, but you don't bring that into your work. A CM is there to spin, talk to fans, and be a bridge between fans and devs. Instead of the devs sitting through thousands of forum posts or youtube comments, the CM can just summarize it for them. It's a bad PR move, and shows that little thought was given to the CM position, which is kinda important. But overall the CM is not a major part of the development process. They're just a face.

Here is a 4chan poster who claims insider knowledge of the project. The key according to them is that the project neglected good programmers. According to him, friends were hired due to connections, rather than talent.
