Metal Age plebs also invited, but will be laughed at.

Dark Project is indeed for Patricians. Wasn't a fan of the undead levels at first myself, but I think they kinda grow on you. Preferred the spooky medieval setting of the first game a little more than the Victorian design of 2's.

The ruined Old Quarter portion of the Haunted Cathedral level is my absolute favorite.

Epic contrarianism. Thief 2 is better in just about every way.
It's sad that a Thief thread has to start with bait on this shithole. Sage.

Thief 2 is only better for plebs that have played each game only once. As soon as you delve into multiple playthrough she territory it becomes easy to realize that T1 is the superior experience. T1 has so much more variety in gameplay to keep you hooked while T2 spends half of its levels literally throwing copy pasted maps or concepts at you. No two levels in T1 are the same really, T2 has some great levels like life of the party of course, but Trail of Blood pt1 is very much like Assassins from T1 (been there, done that), then there's the infamous casing the joint and masks which is just fucking stupid.

Seriously, on repeat playthroughs of the series T2 is such a slog. T1 at least keeps it interesting throughout, also the setting in T1 is way better.

Are thief 2 fanboys that shun everything to do with thief 1 the worst fans in the series? They can't help but shitpost about how they don't like zombies whenever a thief thread shows up. Thief 2 would have improved tenfold if Thief 2 Gold was released and we had the official necromancer's tower level with zombies and spooks.

Every mission of Thief 1 is at least good, most are excellent. Thief 2 is full of terrible shit
>Running Interference
Tiny, ugly, simple
>Ambush
A terrible version of Assassins from Thief 1
>Eavesdropping
Ugly, tiny, metal floor everywhere
>Trace the Courier
This level is shit
>Trail of Blood
SHIT!
>Kidnap
A terrible, tinier version of Lost City
>Casing the Joint/Masks
Basically "sorry we were approaching deadline so be a dear and play the same shitty level twice. We slapped turrets everywhere"
>Sabotage
This level is fun to do once but boy does it suck balls on repeated plays. Giant and laboursome in the most literal sense.

The biggest problem with Thief 2 is that it has no thieving. The game is too concerned with the plot, and fun missions like Shipping and Receiving were immediately replaced by Splinter Cell-tier spy missions. Very few missions of Thief 2 even have loot objectives.

What are the biggest differences between 1 and 2? The gamechanging ones that make you prefer one before the other.

>I only have 2 on steam and so far it has been pretty nice

The engine, graphics and roster of enemies are better & larger. That doesn't mean the actual experience of the game itself and official missions are better.

>>
>>385205959
I prefer Gold because of the Pagan themes and natural entities you have to sneak around. Both games have very enjoyable missions, but I prefer the natural themes of Gold. One of my slight problems with 2 is that by default your aerial speed doesn't increase with every jump the same way in Gold, but that can be changed in a .ini file.
>>
>>385205959
engine
>AI delay in their scripting
>they react to open doors or missing loot
>better mantle mechanics (the reason why the patches uses the thief 2 engine in gold)
>improved lighting and sound propagation

Gameplay wise, the second half of thief 1 detach very hard from the regular get in the mansion, steal shit and get out, when thief 2 is more sober about it.
>>
>>385205959
They are 95% similar. When people talk about the differences it's mostly the story.
I can't help but think of them as two parts of a whole - one is about nature taking over, the other about technology taking over. They fit each other well and I've yet to see someone like one game and hate the other.
>>
>>385205959
Thematically, Thief 1 has more fantasy elements. Zombies, skellintons, monsters, giant spiders, living fireballs etc all of that is gone in MA. There's also a greater variety in missions, you explore tombs, prisons, go undercover, magical castles, mage towers, other dimensions. The levels have more interconnected pathways. Also, Thief 1 Garrett can bunnyhop, it makes no sense but I miss that shit in Thief 2.
>>
>>385206318
If you want to be spoonfed, you've already lost. Making a decent Thief level is not easy.
>>
>>385199751
It will take a while to get into it, the style is very different to modern games. But trust me once it clicks you can really enjoy it.

I fucking wish thief 1 was 'pretty generic'. That would mean there were more games like thief 1! When in fact there is only 1 game like thief 1 and that is thief 2
>didn't like the huge and empty levels
The huge levels are one of the best things about the game though? What's the last game you played where you could actually get lost like you can in Thief? This kind of design is almost unthinkable to developers in this day and age. Even on the rare occasion when a game isn't one long linear corridor where it's impossible to not know where to go, the devs will add a fucking gods-eye map and a quest compass! Even some of the fucking linear games have maps and quest compasses just to make sure you go pick the right direction through the corridor that only goes in 2 fucking directions (forwards and backwards)!
>I really couldn't stand the "horror" levels.
Dunno what to tell you on this one. I don't think they are supposed to be 'horror' though, they simply involve supernatural forces

I think that it's one of my favorite levels in pretty much any game. The way it fucks with the player's expectations with just pure level design is genius and adds a lot to the surreal tone of the game.

The game overall is really good at pulling the rug from under the player, like at the moment when you meet the first zombie or see other supernatural shit for the first time. All these things are usually foreshadowed very lightly and because there's no big cutscene or something to highlight that weird stuff is coming, it's very impactful.
>>
>>385223029
>well, if you have the money you can build any crazy mansion you want
At this point you imagine weird traps or security systems, but not what you end up having.
>>
>>385219906
The gameplay is pretty "basic" stealth gameplay because it was basically the first first person stealth game ever, at least in the west. The fact that you don't shoot everyone was enough to make the game very un-generic when it was released.

Other than that it's just a very well made stealth game with that sweet Looking Glass Studios attention to detail and immersion.
