The untricked R1 combo has the highest dps of any weapon in the game.
The problem /v/ has with this weapon is that it's not as cool as the other ones, it's moveset is too good and once you figure this out you'll likely never touch the more interesting weapons later in the game.

I myself thought the boom hammer was cool as fuck, but could never find a use for it because why am I using this 500 damage weapon when this generic sword does 1200 damage in the same time?

Kirkhammer is basically the same as Ludvig apart from having a clunkier to use two handed mode.
Ludvig you can get early, the saw you get late in the dlc.

Most people will use the easiest to use and most effective weapon they can get fairly early on in these games. This is because swapping weapons in these games is usually a massive investment in resources, so they don't bother to change.

The point I made is that most people that play through these games (fresh) will get Ludvig and stick with it for the reasons I mentioned.

Factoring in suicide runs where the player has to know the exact location of the item or NG+ is moot since most people won't do this.
Ludvig is easy to use, very effective, easy to get and you get it early. Hence why most people use it over some wierd weapon that is harder to use or less effective. Some people did however swap over or also use Tonitrus after a while though, but for similar reasons (strong, easy to use).

I can't, chalice dungeons are pure cancer. They also made it one of the worst weapons in the game as a fuck you. Then they added insult to injury by making you fight the most tedious boss in the dlc and the entire game to get the rune that enhances them. And the ultimate troll?
