Because fantasy and medieval depiction of bow-users is completely wrong.

Actual bow users have to be strong as fuck and smooth movement wise. Also not mobile unless on horseback and part of an army.

In fantasy/games it was developed by nerds who never fired a bow. So it became a "dex" lithe class with weak arms. This attracts the ninja crowd.

Similar to ideas in fantasy about strong people being slow, when that's only true for bodybuilders who do no athletics. Whereas linebackers and fullbacks in football are agile and quick as fuck despite being muscled up.

You're wrong about this. Up until WotC got a hold of it and ruined everything for everybody forever, Dex only controlled accuracy, and Str added to the damage for all weapons, including ranged.

Then some idiot at WotC decided to make the argument that "You aim at better spots with Dex, so you do damage through that with ranged weapons!" so that people could make specialized builds instead of rolling random stats.

What ruined Bows was corporations, not gamers.

I'm a bowfag and it's true. I really am the worst kind of player. A lot of people do it because it's easy in a lot of games, you don't worry about being close in danger the way melees do, you don't worry about cast times fucking you the way magic does so it attracts a lot of bad players who can pretend they're good.

Me personally, I'm worse than that. I like bows because they're always bullshit. My fun in games is based off how much I can ruin other the fun of other players. Sniping feels good when you know you can just rain down on people, kiting feels good because it's a playstyle where you get feedback on how pissed the other guy is.

What's great though is that bows are always associated with some of the most frustrating mechanics for other people. Sic a pet on someone and fuck off, lay out a field of traps and drag people through them, drop CC on a target when you don't even have to just to drag things out.

Some of my best bow memories are playing a Hunter in WoW. I didn't gank people, that's just an inconvenience. What I'd do is that I'd find players still leveling from the enemy faction and stalk them. If they tagged a mob, I'd kill it for them. Take a shot and give them the credit, point at things and goad them into picking up more. Maybe pull some extras into the fight, see if they AoE and take aggro. Then I'd feign death. Leave them with a mob of mobs. You can't pull it off twice, but every time I saw someone die to trash like that I'd know that it was better than just killing them because on their end they'd start off confused then slowly come to realize that I'd just costed them a chunk of durability.

Bows require a FUCKLOAD of upper body strength and women, if they were historically involved in warfare, would probably much less effective archers because they wouldn't be able to use strong enough bows.

it was developed because having only two main stats was fucking boring, and the whole rogue archetype would be incredibly underpowered if dexterity was only for daggers and they didn't have access to bows. every single physical attacker would build strength and the warrior archetype would be the best at ranged AND melee.

Strength certainly helps, but the actual control of the back muscles is what's most crucial, in other words, technique.

I do think more games should make STR a more contributing stat to bow classes, instead of making DEX do everything.
