Is there anything more pathetic than playing translated versions of games, instead of in their original language?

You're admitting that you're either too lazy or stupid to do even a basic amount of study, instead relying on someone else's hard work. Like a dog sitting under a table, waiting for scraps that someone else cooked.

There are two types of people who claim to know the Japanese language:

learning a language right now is a bad use of time, machine translation will soon be 1:1. even for japanese it's coming in the next 5 years

fun thing to try, go look up some random spanish or german wikipedia stuff and run it through google translate into english. it's shockingly close to human-level translation even now.

Having put myself in this desolate scenerary
I am filled with sorrow indescribable by words alone
Aaah, why is my heart beating so fast
Is it because of the bright stars twinkling in the sky?
Or is because I felt fear in the corner of my heart?

How'd I do? Am I at least close to the meaning?

Ignore anyone who tells you RTK is a good idea, they're braindead. Either learn through vocab, or do actual kanji study WITH common readings.

You're already trying to tie 2-4 radical components together for each kanji anyway, what's 1-2 phonetic components in the grand scheme of things? You get a much deeper understanding of kanji if you learn readings, because you realise which elements often designate the reading of each symbol.

Spoken like someone that got burned by it. I hated it the first time I tried it too. A friend of my convinced me to give it a second go, and it went really, really well. It's the only thinkg I credit my ability to read novels and newspapers to today.

I'm not saying it's the only way, nor am I saying it's for everyone, but there's a reason RTK has been along as long as it has. Fuck, with kanji.koohii, the hardest part is practically done for you by other people.

That's pretty stupid. I tried it and failed because it was completely absurd and utterly removed from actual Japanese. Then I used KD a few years later and breezed through kanji.

Personally, I don't think kanji study is that necessary. Crediting it with your ability to read newspapers must make you a complete retard. If it was significantly faster than reading based kanji study, maybe I could understand. But it isn't, so you're just spending the same amount of time learning less.

So yeah, it's pretty clear you got burned and didn't really see the method when it opened up. You give it three months of daily study, and on top of that foundation the readings and meanings come incredibly quickly when you're actually reading and using Japanese. It had an outstanding effect on my Japanese. After having studied Japanese for three years before that in uni and still feeling like a relative child when I first moved to Japan, three months was no time at all for what I got. And that's the best part of it really; it seems like a lot on the front end, but it pays off so well if you're actually committed to understanding written Japanese.

Given that you seem to not even be comfortable reading Japanese, I'm guess you throwing around retard is covering up a bit of the self hate you have from not being as solid with the language as you'd like to be. I can understand being upset, but why would you bother wasting your time trying to shit on things you don't understand?

You have no frame of reference. I've at least tried both methods, and RTK was straight up trash. It seems a bit bizarre to start critiquing my Japanese knowledge, but I guess when you spend 3 years on something and don't even get past a first grade level, it must be pretty tough, and anything even slightly effective must seem like a bottle of water in a desert.

Though I'd say this is more of a way to reinforce things you've been taught formally.

>It seems a bit bizarre to start critiquing my Japanese knowledge

>anyone who tells you RTK is a good idea, they're braindead
>Crediting it with your ability to read newspapers must make you a complete retard
>so you're just spending the same amount of time learning less
>spend 3 years on something and don't even get past a first grade level

Not only is the fact that you somehow think you are in a position to start critiquing other's ability in Japanese without any frame of reference pretty bizarre, but by your own admission you don't read Japanese particularly well nor find it to be 'valuable,' which is simply perfect cover for your inability to really engage with Japanese writing.

But keep being mad about other people learning Japanese. That'll really help you crack that nut.
>>
>>385182813
>basic amount of study

Japanese is one, if not THE hardest normie language to learn. Count an entire year with regular learning an hour a day to be able to read AND understand basic japanese.
>>
>>385193741
What the fuck are you on, dude? I'm perfectly happy with my current Japanese level, I can read everything I want to.

My frame of reference is as someone who tried RTK, found it to be the worst thing I've ever wasted my time on, and gave up on Japanese for like 5 years, partially because of it. Then I used KD, which made actual sense despite not being 100% accurate, and it helped me get to where I am today.

Meanwhile you jerked off for 3 years in a pointless course, and then found a method that vaguely works. Now you keep pushing that same terrible method just because it's slightly less terrible than sitting in a classroom for 3 years learning nothing.

I'm "mad" about you continuing to push an awful, 30 year outdated method that effectively serves only as a baseline. After finishing RTK, what exactly do you have to show for 3 months of work, which is a lot for a beginner? Absolutely nothing. You can't read a sentence, you can't even understand any jukugo. I guess you had 3 years of pointless wheel-spinning to think back on, so 3 months seemed like a better deal. Most people don't like spending that long on something with no progress, though.

>pushing a method

I'm sorry, but what the fuck are you on about, exactly?

I'm not even here to push the method. Like you, I found something that worked well for me as it has for many serious learners of Japanese, and just wanted to say that it's not a method for 'braindead retards.' I'm sorry you had a shit experience, but your reductive opinion invalidating an entire method of study is, well, shit.

At this point it's obvious you don't really care where I was after 3 years of study, what I actually got after 3 months of RTK, and what I found to be the good and bad parts of the methods. If you somehow wanted to actually engage about this, great job.

But as I said in my first reply, I'm not saying it's the best. I'm not saying it's the only. I am saying it's used for a reason. And I'm sorry that you are mad enough at a book written 30+ years ago to keep spewing this shit unprompted.
>>

>>385194767
I was one of the anons who lied about knowing Japanese ITT. Can you two be friends and tell me the correct way of learning it?
>>
>>385194767
And I'm saying the only reason it's used is because idiots like you keep using it on recommendations of other idiots. It's an outdated method that's just straight up inferior to currently available solutions. Learning something a particular way because someone thought it'd be a good idea to do that 30 years ago is pretty silly, and your experience is far from average.

There are a lot of people who wind up trying to learn 5 kanji a day and never get anywhere because RTK and the associated resources are made for the kinds of people who think Genki is a good study book.

I don't really care where you were after 3 years of study, because I know the typical school syllabus and I know you were barely 500 kanji in with 2k vocab at best. Most people don't spend 3 years on an incredibly slow method and then get wowed by RTK, they start with RTK and get depressed because they've spent a few months on something and they can't read a word.

>>385194935
Look at the 4chan guides, try a few different methods. Core 2k and Tae Kim seem to work well for most people, I found Japanese the manga way a lot better for grammar though.

It's a faster way for learning japanese.
I learnt 2000 kanji and their meanings in 3 month.
I repeat 2000 in 3 months.

You don't really need the readings as they change depending on the word.
You learn them as you go. I've never done kanji damage, but others and myself included can tell you that it works.
Also kanji koohii, speeds it up and I feel I wouldn't given up like you if I didn't have it.
>>
>>385195908
Also just in case you want to know if know japanese, yes I do. I just don't study anymore, I stopped years ago but can easily play games and read almost anything.
>>
>>385195908
I did KD in the same time period, and I got a shit load of readings down. Then I went through core 2k at 50 cards a day without breaking a sweat, simply because so much of it was stuff I basically already knew.

Common readings are fun, and they'll cover the majority of words you'll encounter.

Languages are fundamentally incredibly easy to learn, it's just a question of time investment. Japanese is only "harder" because it takes longer, but if you have no real frame of reference for how long it takes to learn an "easy" closely related language, then the idea of a language being "hard" is meaningless.

Started about a week ago, I'm trying to break out of being an EOP. I'd rather take it slow than having to relearn shit. Honestly it's not so bad besides having to basically disconnect yourself from your current perspective into another one. The hard part for me is my motivation to keep pushing forward because I'm a lazy fuck. I already know what my endgame is, so if I keep chipping away I'll probably reach it.
>>
>>385200901
>I'd rather take it slow than having to relearn shit.
You will always have to reinforce shit. Going slow really just increases the amount of stuff you'll have to reinforce, because you will forget more shit over time.
>>
>>385200842
I've come to understand German just by watching tv for maybe a year. I still can't understand Japanese outside few very common words despite all the years of watching anime.
English as a foreign language is now being taught in kindergartens because experts claim exactly what i said, since children's only role in life is learning, both from biological and society's standpoint, they pick up things faster and are more open to trying out new skills.
>>
Dropped it after 2 months.
Enjoy learning everything and then forgetting 3/4 of it when you take a 2 week break from reading anything japanese related.
>"W-w-well I just won't take a break ever then"
You'll get burned and stressed out eventually, I can assure you of that.

The only people making these threads are legitimate autists who desperately want others to make the same mistakes that they have, and learning Jap is one of the most pointless wastes of time there is.

Here's the fantasy they paint vs the reality of things

>Hey anon, I learned Japanese and now I can read games like Pokemon!

Reality -

>Hey anon, I've been dedicating 2 hours each day to learning Jap and now I can read through games like Pokemon (easiest shit ever) at an incredibly slow pace, haha at l-least I don't have to put up with those translations!

I started learning because a friend of mine, who I'm still friends with convinced me to give it a go. They've stuck with it for 11 months and they still can't read any of the actual hard to read games like Trails in The Sky.
>>
>>385200842
Language is filter through which thought is processed.

In other words, it's a way of thinking.
So to learn English is to think in English.

It stands to reason, then, that a child will more easily absorb multiple ways of thinking, than someone who has been thinking one way for decades.
>>
Kanji are annoying but easy as fuck to learn. Grammar isn't that had either. The biggest problem is the vocabulary but that's obviously not limited to japanese. I don't know where to learn grammar from. Even with the books I get from the university it's not that much maybe around 3-3.5k.
>>
>>385201305
It's almost as if German is incredibly closely related to English or something. Or that you could veg out for 16 hours in front of a TV as a kid, but you only watch 1 episode of anime a day.

Your science is flawed. They teach kids languages because they're a trivial concept to understand at any age, while 3 year olds can't really grasp algebra. It's just a smarter use of time than finger painting.
>>
>>385201429
Yeah man, learning vocabulary is shitty.

I feel like the best/most natural way would be to import some vocab workbooks from Japan, like whatever they actually use in school.

But even then there's no real way to replicate growing up for several years in Japan and just picking up the countless common words through daily life.
>>
doesn't matter if you learn jap or not, you're still a pathetic gaijin haha, kys weeaboos
>>
>>385201426
>It stands to reason, then, that a child will more easily absorb multiple ways of thinking, than someone who has been thinking one way for decades.
This hypothesis implies that some "innate" understanding of things is somehow more advanced than having something explained to you.

Imagine trying to understand how a computer works by taking it apart and examining every component. Or you could just have someone TELL you how every part works.

Language at a fundamental level is just rote memorisation and experience. Kids just happen to be a little better at doing boring shit for hours on end.
>>
>>385201780
I've seen it in action, man. I've taken several language classes.

I happen to have a knack for languages, which I attribute to my ease with abstract concepts. Language itself is abstract.

Even in Spanish, a language that's pretty close to English and easy besides, many of my classmates just couldn't get it to click in their minds. Because it isn't just swapping English words for Spanish words.
It's grammar, conjugation, pronunciation. The very fundamentals of language are different. Specifically, different from what you've been using your whole life.

That's what people trip over. It's not the tangible pieces of the language, but the method of stringing them together.
Because it requires them to think in a different way.

Yes, learning a language just to okay video games.
>>
>>385202210
Language classes are one of the most useless ways to try and learn, though. The real issue is that people are taught from a young age the "best" way to learn, which is cramming facts to approximate understanding, which is what works well for schoolwork. That isn't what's good for language learning though, which is all about experience.

Young children are just more prone to actually trying out the language instead of burying their heads in textbooks.

Language is fundamentally just collections of stock phrases. While sentence structure does vary, it's nothing that difficult to grasp, and kids certainly struggle with it for longer.
