Playing this for the first time. The amount of playable characters is a little overwhelming so I'm wondering if there's any consensus on "must have" characters or am I OK just winging it and recruiting whoever? I know there are a lot of ways to permanently miss certain characters.

For reference, I just recruited Guile to be my guide into the Viper mansion - I assume that means I'm locked out of recruiting the other potential guides?

Music in this game is fantastic.
>>
Awful sequel
>>

im new to it as well, but my friend has been getting at me to play it since the 8th grade.

From my playthrough decisions or interactions can either cause you to do one of the following:
>get character now
>get character later in game
>not get character A, but get cahracter B soon after

Because there are so many characters, they're all pretty much set up to be stand-ins for each other. I wouldn't worry about it at all, and just pick whoever you like best. And yes, you won't get to recruit everyone on your first playthrough so don't sweat it.

Guile is cool.
>>
I just pick the waifus and a few cool guys as my main picks
>>
>>385180009
Apparently if you turn down Kid's invitation to join your party twice (first at the grave, second time in Termina) she will never join. Despite being so important to the story, you can skip her entirely.
>>
>>385180119
>I wouldn't worry about it at all, and just pick whoever you like best.
Cool, that's what I was leaning towards. The only person I know I want for sure is Glenn.
>>
>>385179780
The only missable character that you're at a clear disadvantage for not grabbing is Glenn.
If no one spoils you on how to get him, you'll probably miss him on a first play through as it involves making the "wrong" choice in what seems like a really obvious decision story wise.
That said, it's not like the game is so hard that you need the extra OP character.
>>
Some good characters are Kid (duh), Glenn, Fargo, Radius, Norris, and Karsh.
>>
>>385180549

Glenn is a fan favorite because he resembles Frog, younger brother the badass character you don't play as, gets to dual wield, has a double tech with Serge, and is the 3rd player character in the demo screen. But the way you get him is total bullshit:

You have to let Kid die. Its totally unrealistic in an rpg with so many weird shit going on. Also the characters you get when you actually do the mission kinda suck(Though some people might like the fairy). It even lets you skip parts of the game.

Later on, you encounter plenty of cool characters (who were mostly previous bosses). They aren't that hard to choose.

Pip is also neat I guess because it transforms. Sprigg has an ability to transform into different monsters.

Most of them are really weird and pointless.

Yeah, during Trigger the only island in the archipelago that exists is Gaea's Navel

After Crono and co. save the future, Chronopolis gets built, but an experiment on the Frozen Flame goes wrong and transports the whole facility back in time 10000 years, to the Sea of Eden.
F.A.T.E. understands the introducing future tech into the past is a bad idea and terraforms the rest of the islands into existence to hide itself.
It also mind wipes all the researchers at the facility and sends them to live on said islands.
All the natives of the archipelago (except for Leah) are descendants of the scientists from Chronopolis.

Its pretty easy to miss party members if you don't have a guide. Only a few of them are directly in your path like Guile and there's a few more that you'll get in the main quest iself, but most of them are out of the way
And some are just plain obtuse.

But in all seriousness you can use whatever party set up you want because Serge does so much god damn damage. You can have 2 shitty party members who do nothing and still plow through bosses provided you understand how the element field works.

I remember hearing so much complaining about how the battle system was obtuse/confusing and there wasn't enough tutorial etc.
Not sure what they were talking about because it all makes perfect sense and is actually a pretty neat system
>>
>>385187000
I got the hang of it in like half an hour.
The element system is actually pretty cool and makes a lot of sense, use elements and that element gets stronger, stacks up to 3 times, but other colors will ruin the combo so you gotta keep it going.
The only thing I don't like from the battle system is how enemies can interrupt you while you're doing your combo swings.
I know why its something to do with how many actions they're given at the start of a fight, but I wish they'd have made it more clear when its actually their turn to strike so you can play around it as opposed to your character jumping back and you being forced out of what you were doing.

>>
>>385179780
Just wing it this time, you retain all the characters you acquired in the next play through anyway so just go for it.

Guile is probably the b3st choice out of those 3, Pierre is pretty good if you get his accessories and items, Nikki is alright, but you made a good choice

Overall the best ones would probably be orlha, grobyc is good but you get him anyway so he's always there, Leah is good too, Glenn is a good choice overall due to his dual techs and sword later on, pip as an arch devil is really good too and sprigg but you get sprigg anyway with the plot.

Orlha and Leah are probably the strongest physical wise, but ultimately your party will depend on what innate elements you get and the double/triple techs you use.

And yeah, the score for this game is a masterpiece.

Ah yes the old debate of Flea's true gender.

>Most people look at Flea and assume he is female as he takes the physical form of one. Once he mentions he is actually a man mass confusion breaks out. Look at it this way: when Flea first appears in the Magic Cave he takes the form of an ordinary bat. When he appears for battle in Magus' Castle he changes into a human form. This leads us to believe he can assume any shape he desires as he is a magician. Note that the demi-human Sprigg could also change shape, so it is possible the trait is passed down through some types of demi-humans. It is also possible the female exterior we see is not even Flea's true form; it is impossible to know for sure what Flea really looks like. The bottom line is Flea claims to be a male in Chrono Trigger and is labeled as a male in Chrono Cross. Who would know more about Flea's gender than the man himself? Why he assumes the shape of a girl is unknown.

Source: http://www.cot.drackir.com/inquiry.htm this guy's site is a pretty good and straightforward collection of a lot of Cross/Trigger information

The main writer of the Chrono series, Maso Kato, never really wanted to make a sequel. When he made Radical Dreamers he had no intention of linking it to CT, Square told him to.

With CC he kind of just threw a fuck ton of ideas together. He was actually the writer for the nes Ninja Gaiden games, some ideas he used from there are even recycled in CC.

When the main minds are gone and the lead writer jaded as fuck it's natural the game ended up the way it was.

"The second game in the Chrono series, Radical Dreamers was a pseudo-sequel to Chrono Trigger. It was released in 1996 but was only available in Japan. In order to play the game one must first buy an add-on for the Super Famicom (the Japanese equivalent to the Super Nintendo). This device was called the Satellaview and it made it possible to download games via satellite onto a memory chip. Once saved, the games could be played at any time on the Super Famicom. No cartridges of Radical Dreamers were ever produced, and as a result the game is impossible to purchase now that the Satellaview service is discontinued. Now if one wishes to play the game he must emulate it on his computer."

I would argue that CC is a great game, but a poor sequel. The meat and bones of a proper sequel are there but you can tell there were time and budget constraints that kept it from its full potential.

Literally the worst thing about CC is that it just casually informs the player that the comic relief character Dalton from the last game came back after being discarded like the nobody he was and killed the squad that utterly wrecked Lavos and all of Guardia in a relatively fast-paced war.

The set up is actually good.
CT leaves unresolved business to wrap up with Magus leaving to search fro his sister, and the player is never shown the new not destroyed future.

However, Kato decided to take these things and run them basically as far into left field as he could.
The new future is, with the exception of one facility, reserved for cut scenes only and Magus gets dropped from the story but you still find his sister anyway, because she fused with a new big bad that is even worse than Lavos, because you need to up the stakes in a sequel, and she needs to fall in love with the brand new MC in order to un-fuse her.
Yes seriously.

I guess you're right, we're hitting diminishing returns in not just graphics but also gameplay. A lot of things got polished up in the last 10 years but nothing truly revolutionary beyond limited gimmicks like motion control and (maybe) VR

Back around 2000 they were still figuring out the transition into proper 3D so a lot of games came out with some really experimental shit. A lot of it didn't stick, like Cross's battle system, but there weren't any set standards yet.

Nah, she uses the last of her power to teleport everybody out and then gets absorbed into Lavos/the darkness between time.

At the end of the game if Magus is in your party Marle asks him if he's going to look for Schala, and he leaves without saying anything.
>>
>>385197523
That doesn't make it a good idea to have a character you beat decisively kill all of your characters between games. Especially when they added a line in CT DS, where he explicitly tells Crono and crew that he's going to build an army in Porre to kill them, and yet when they get back home at the end, they don't bother to head down to Porre and kill his ass.
>>
>>385198279

"Schala is alive" was always a big vidya rumor back before Cross happened.
>>
>>385179780
90% of the cast is relatively equally shit, and you should only use the ones you like
The other 10% are only better if you jump through hoops to get whatever makes them good
Have at least one person of each base element on rotation, and avoid overusing the same weapon type, since you will have to buy more shit and can use fewer upgrades.
That's really it. Use the Luchador and the Dog if that makes you happy. It really doesn't matter much.
>>
>>385198535
I kind of like that Dalton was able to get a cheap win. He probably used dirty tactics and subterfuge to split the gang up (and it was really just Crono and Marle honestly, with their magic). Otherwise Guardia in 1000AD was pretty peaceful and had no reason to have a large standing army or expect any kind of attack.
>>
>>385198535
Well, he doesn't kill ALL the characters, in fact it's never explicitly stated that he kills any of them at all.
Lucca is killed by Lynx when he burns down her house
Crono and Marle go MIA when Guardia is attacked by Porre but it's never explicitly stated they die right then.
Robo is killed on screen in Cross when F.A.T.E. destroys the Prometheus Circuit, a fact that seems to go over a bunch of people's heads, probably because the scene is really poorly done.

I loved this game back when it dropped, I was 16 when it came out. Only thing I still can't figure out after all these years is why Lynx just says fuck his goals after he finally gets Serges(arbiter) body and instead randomly starts to murder , rape pillage and savage the el nido islands

WHAT IS THE BEST FAN MADE SEQUEL THAT BRIDGES TRIGGER AND CROSS I NEED A FAST ANSWER
>>
>>385202049
No, I also struggled with the key item thing a few times. Having to open a menu and select the item is one of those antiquated things I'm glad is mostly gone from RPGs now. Now if you have the item, it will prompt you to use it, and that's a good improvement.
>>
>>385202151
I don't know if there is one
You can emulate Radical Dreamers but it's not really considered the proper bridge anymore and was just absorbed into the story of Cross

>The main writer of the Chrono series, Maso Kato, never really wanted to make a sequel. When he made Radical Dreamers he had no intention of linking it to CT, Square told him to.

Its got to suck being a creative guy like him only to realize your visions will always be at the mercy of the corporate higher ups. Reminds me of what happened with the MGS series.
>>
>>385204312
I'm torn because I like CC and what it adds to the story but can also see that if they'd just left it alone with Trigger that might have been even better.

Horrible sequel, why was this made?
>>
>>385179780
My only recommendation is Mojo since that motherfucker will have almost 70% dodge by the end of the game.

OP here again
I'm on the Ghost Ship now

I've played enough JRPGs to know that this section is going to be frustrating bullshit so if there is some secret to getting off this boat ASAP I would very much appreciating being spoiled on it.

Any time in a JRPG you find yourself
-Imprisoned without your gear
-In a sewer
-On a boat
There is always a bullshit gimmick involved that I'll have to look up anyway

>to be fair, MGS2 ended with a lot of questions that needed to be answered.

But this was the intention Kojima had the whole time. He wanted his series to end like this. I'm not saying it is the right way to go but I thought MGS4 was the absolute biggest piece of shit for a game and it is easily the most overrated game I've played.

I will however say that considering the fan reaction and how much of a cash cow the series is Kojima should have just went the money direction and pumped out Solid Snake games for 2 and beyond. Clearly that is what people wanted.
>>
>>385205438
save the pirates and talk to them until you find one with a key
it's random which one has it so have fun
also everything black element because they're ghosts so Serge will just destroy them.
Which you should do because the skeleton drop shit tons of iron for crafting gear. If iron gear is still good for you at this point I don't fully remember when you get the next tier
>>
>>385205557
It doesn't matter if it was intended if the intention results in a shit product.
You do not have a story that is concluded with critical questions unanswered. The audience will, rightly, continue to demand a conclusion.

Is there a guide for which of the gorillion companions are actually story important, have quests associated with them and unique dialogues?
>>
>>385208292
Most of the really story-important ones will join you automatically at one point or another, but yes there are all kinds of in-depth guides out there for recruiting people.
>>
>>385208372
Can you link decent one?
>>
>>385208425
This should be a good enough starting point.

http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/psx/cc/characters.shtml

When you meet a character that you can recruit, it's usually really obvious. From there you just look up what their techs are and how to get them to join.

As for sidequests and unique dialogue, they all have a little bit of something. Some are pretty obscure but you can always just look up the character specifically and find out. Most of the sidequests and character growth are related to getting them a unique weapon or a tech skill.
>>
>>385208716
Thanks.

>All of them have something
Jesus fuck my OCD
>>
>>385208759
You keep all the people you recruited on your first playthrough in a NG+ and the game is pretty short, so don't worry about it too much
>>
>>385208842
Even still, my OCD already hurts from thinking about it. I hate when I can't 100% shit in one playthrough.
>>
>>385209138
Oh, then it's going to be painful for you. You're gonna have to learn to let go.

Though a lot of the extra dialogue is just window-dressing and pretty obvious, like taking Glenn to his house with him in the front of your party (yes party placement is also important for triggering certain things, enjoy)

You can 100% every single Purseowner in one playthrough with exception of P1 and PQ, try harder. Those were tame.

Yeah but only really if you're using a guide, which for me kind of ruins the whole point of a Persona game

Chrono Cross was pretty good, it had a lot of great memorable music like Trigger did.

I just don't like the overabundance of characters. It reduces the grip on the story for me because many characters lack backstories and are shallow outside of their 10-15 minute recruitment questlines.
>>
>>385209670
Nah I don't mean spoilers, I mean a guide will tell you "on July 17th you must talk to ___ and eat food at ___" when for me the whole fun of a Persona game is just doing whatever you want

that's why P5 pissed me off that fucking cat would never let me do anything

>>
>>385211584
Probably one of the biggest oversights in the plot is that Serge only survives one of his near death encounters because Kid travels back in time to save him, but this happens, from Kid's perspective, after the game finishes so the player never sees her do it and it seems like a plot hole instead.
>>
>>385213013
Unfortunately it continues rewarding you for making wrong choices later on, long past the point where they stop making any sense
>>
>>385213501
I think having Serge undergo two separate near death experiences as a child was a poor choice. They should have consolidated the two into one. The game focuses so heavily on the panther thing that the actual timeline split feels tacked on.
>>
>>385213975
Can't argue with that
they dangle Glenn in front of you then lock him behind the non-heroic choice
