Do games need to have those two things to be considered a game? Kirby's Epic Yarn has no failstates but that's still a game that people frequently say good things about on here. Life is Strange has segments where you walk around and interact with your environments in order to gain access to new dialogue options or mess with something in the environment that has an effect on what happens later on, so it's not like watching a movie. It's not a game in the traditional sense of the word, but I think we are at a point where games exist that aren't all about overcoming some great obstacle or having complex systems that all interact with each other. Life is Strange is still a game as it has qualities that can only exist in a game, but it's more about telling a story rather than giving the player challenges, which in my opinion is totally fine.
