>They're called "indie games"
>They're funded from big companies or crowdfunding to be made
Why is this shit allowed
>>
>>385159725
Because the second you call out shitheels like schafer they deflect any criticisms with wild mental gymnastics, or ad hominem attacks. It's also hard for legitimate indies to fight back against large studios who have money to hire professionals to manage their social networking and spin public opinion in their favour.
>>
>>385159725
Crowdfunding doesn't make them not independent
>>
>>385159994
Still they shouldn't be called indie. Just smaller companies

>>385160085
>independent
>depending on customers' donations to be made
Serious nigga?
>>
It's like Indie Film, too.

When The Weinstein Company and A24 films make Oscar Winning films that get wide releases, it's hardly Indie.

Gaming is a bit different; some indies and really indie, but it is a weird word.
>>
I went to a panel at comiccon over the weekend that was supposed to be for 'Tips in starting Indie Game development' and basically all the panelists were working in huge teams or had some sort of investment backing.

I agree with this anon >>385160085 but found it silly hearing their 'success' stories all stemming from large backing companies or some sort of similar contributions.

For example, the composer of Metal Gear was on the panel tooting her horn about how someone loved her music so much that they wanted to help her fund a game. Because of this she was able to get a bunch of 'best in the industry' people together to make a racing game. Is she 'Indie'? Not really, but she considers herself as much.

Luckily one of the guys from Monaco was there and gave some pretty good solo dev advice.
>>
>>385159725
Because they are independent of the main corporate brand.

For example: Ubisoft and Bethesda havr trusted reputations they need to uphold. Although they can profit from a mutually agreed upon financial venture. It's important that they distance themselves from properties like Undertail, so as to still maintain their own expected qualities standards for the parent brand.
>>
>>385160278
>claims to be independent
>depends on food, clothing, shelter and social interaction to mere survive
>>
Who calls a game funded by a big company an "indie game"?
>>
>>385160910
>social interaction
Where do you think you are right now?
>>
>>385160910
Many indie games are made without asking money from big companies or Kickstarter. And they end up being awesome. Like Cave Story and La Mulana. Why some losers needs donations to make RPG Maker games is beyond me.
>>
>>385160278
You're a fucking idiot.
>>
>>385159725
>theyre called 'indie games'
>the games are not about defecating on streets
>>
>>385160278
Indie literally means 'strong independent developer who don't need no publisher'. It's basically any company that self-publishes their work.
>>
>>385161583
>EA is Indie
>>
Why are black intellectuals so effay.
>>
>>385161961
You're retarded
>>
Indie doesn't exist anymore.
>>
>>385159725
Because they define "indie" as not directly part of one of the major publishers, or only limited control by such publishers.

It's a label that is still helps more than it hurts, so people will still try to convince themselves and others that their projects fit into it.

Then there's the whole indie vs. independent and so on.
>>
>>385162830
Unravel is considered by many to be an "Indie game".
>>
>>385163809
How close do you think unravel devs are to EA?
>>
>>385165252
The game was published by EA. Full stop.
>>
Just because you are too dumb to know what it means to be indie doesn't change the definition. Budget and size have nothing to do with it.
Marvel Studios was an indie studio for a long time.
>>
>>385159725
It's a title.
