Friendly reminder that if you're using a 1080p monitor with HDMI, go into the Nvidia control panel and turn Dynamic Range from "Limited" to "Full." The reason for this is because if you're using an HDMI cable GPU drivers assume you're on a TV so they gimp the shading and brightness settings.

Bonus: If using an expensive monitor check your color depth, it might be stuck on 8bpc when you can go 10bpc.

I actually had it on full range but after something happened, it was back to limited as well. There's this issue that it will work in conjuction with your monitor as well because the screen usually scales the limited scale back to full range when displaying the image on screen (limited is something like 16 to 235 and full is from 0 to 255 for example). However there has been something sketchy about this all. Sometimes the gamma was lifted and sometimes it wasn't. I originally kept it on 'limited' because I have Wii U on second input and I hate to adjust the monitor setting all the time when switching inputs.

But now keeping it on 'full' seems to work. I ditched Wii U permanently.
>>
>>385139906
Holy fuck, I got so used to Limited that this really makes a difference.

>>
>>385139906
I wondered why my colors was shit when I upgraded from a 7970 to a 980, then found this is the reason.

Why they have limited as the default option seems retarded to me. Many people probably play with the washed out colors.
>>
>>385139906
Also outputting 10 bits per pixel doesn't work unless the game itself renders in that depth. It's almost always 8 bits per pixel which equals RGBAx8 = 32bits.

You just consume more vram for nothing if using 10 bits per pixel.
>>
>>385139906
holy fuck this is so much brighter
>>
>>385139906
I thought everyone knew this. The bigger issue is that people who have TVs never set it to PC mode to remove all post processing.
>>
>Nvidia
>>
>>385139906
thanks dude
everything is really dark now tho
>>
I don't even have the options for that running a 980
>>
>>385141230
>>385141063
It doesn't necessarily work that way. Your monitor most often automatically recognizes the signal and adjusts the displayed colors accordingly.

However if you manually set wrong color level output on your monitor it will be washed out.

Using 'limited' and 'full' are both viable and it only depends of your monitor settings. Both of the options should look equally black if you have everything set up correctly.
>>
>>385141335
PC mode on my TV is the only way I can really get 4x4x4 which has slightly more input lag than Game Mode.
>>
>>385141335
this is another common issue. I almost returned my tv before finding out the pc mode
>>
>>385139906
This basically will feel like HDR, the problem is that it makes dark, way too dark.
>>
>>385141063
Compatibility issues, if it gets set to Full and the monitor doesn't supports it, it will just show a black screen.
AMD has similar problems with Pixel Format, my other PC with a HD7950 and a HP monitor connected by 1080p can't display properly unless I mess with it and the underscaling settings.

Some modern monitors do work fine.
>>
>>385141480
full is for monitors
limited is for tv

limited on a monitor looks like trash compared to full, and limited is the default option

HDMI fucking never ever.

DVI master race. Shit just knows this is a monitor and doesn't play around with that stupid pussy shit.

Thanks for the heads up OP, I'm borrowing a nVidia card from a friend as a stop gap between my old 6970 and Vega and thought the colors looked a bit desaturated.

shit my man me too, i thought it was just the new monitor
>>
Neato
>>
>>385141607
That's not true. My screen can display both of them properly. It depends of the monitor settings. Usually there is setting called "Black Level" and it can be set to either "Low" or "High".

When using "Limited" output monitor black level should be set "Low. If ouput is "Full" black level should be set "Normal/High" (depends of what's written). If you mix the settings you will get crushed black levels or greyish image. Both are bad.
>>
thanks for the reminder
>>
>>385142053
YCbCr is basically just a different way of displaying colors than RGB that may be more or less compatible with certain displays. YCbCr is the digital version YPbPr, or "component." Remember those red, green and blue cables on older consoles?
>>
>>385142658
You shouldn't use those unless you have old CRT and analog cables.
>>
>>385139906
Pssh. I can't figure out why anyone would use a monitor these days. I have a 65" OLED and there isn't a monitor out there that even comes close. Screech about whatever technical doodad you want, I'm playing in 4K 60 or higher fps on a 65" screen with full HDR and no tearing, blurring or anything else.

I haven't owned a monitor in like 6 years.

It's supposed to be that way. Now you have correct contrast. Black things are actually black.

>not using DisplayPort
24" 1920x1200 16:10 monitors that lack HDMI but support DisplayPort are less than $100 on ebay. Why aren't you taking advantage of the dummies that won't buy them because "muh HDMI missing"?

2560x1600 is cheap too.
>>
>>385143134
Yes. Adjust in-game brightness if you don't like it.
>>
>>385143134
Before you adjust anything make sure you follow this: >>385142506

If you are unsure go to some AV forum. Don't mess up your screen calibration just because you don't understand how the input and output settings work.

>>385144232

>>
>>385144174
No, DVI and DisplayPort are designed for monitors so they should work out of box. The issue is with HDMI, and it mainly affects "TV resolutions" like 720p or 1080p.
>>
>>385144615
I forgot to mention the new monitor is also 1080p, the upgrade/cord was for muh FPS
>>
>>385141230
my eyes kinda hurt but I assume I'll get used to it with time
>>
>>385144771
Just double check. Also try overclocking your monitor with both HDMI and DVI, while dual link DVI has a higher theoretical maximum refresh rate than HDMI (I can get 1440p/120Hz on mine) sometimes the DVI slot is gimped and limited to single link. For example, on my old 1080p monitor, HDMI got 76, while DVI and dual link DVI both only got 65. Basically it depends on the monitor which is better.

I use a BENQ RL2455HM monitor with HDMI
when I set it to limited the colors look nice and impactful (top)
when I set it to full it looks washed out (bottom)
I tried to emulate this in my pic
is there something wrong with my monitor?

Is there any reason I should switch my monitor from DVI to HDMI?

Check your display settings, there might be a black boost option or an HDMI black level option, play with those.

Pick one. TV's have worse input lag, lot's of post-processing unless you turn on gaming mode, and inaccurate, shit colors unless OLED. (That's why this discussion is happening in the first place, TV's have limited dynamic range, 16-235.)
>>
>>385147483

Vlc stops looking washed out if you change a setting in the nvidia control panel. Something to do with video output.
>>
>>385148518
Uh, Nvidia is run by chinks, AMD's graphics division is run by King Pajeet.
>>
I must be extra cancerous then. I have a 970 hooked up to a 47" tv via hdmi
>>
It's kind of crazy when you realize how many normies are probably using an HDMI cable and are gaming with washed out colors.
>>
>>385139906
Thanks asshole, now my main monitor's DP port doesn't work. All I did was change the color output depth and format. At least the HDMI port still works, but it doesn't support 144hz.
>>
Holy shit, this made a huge difference. I have no option for 10bpc, but there's one for 12bpc. Is bigger number = better in this case?
>>
>>385152547
>color format
I'm surprised your monitor doesn't support anything other than RGB, odd. YCrCb works fine for me. Just put everything on default settings, if that doesn't work you'll have to reinstall the driver.
>>
>>385139906
Holy shit, got a new monitor on Saturday and thought it looked washed out and shit, now it looks great. Turns out OP wasn't a fag today, good job.
>>
>>385153553
It wasn't set on anything, and the only option was YCbCr444. Restoring default settings didn't fix it. Reinstall the deiver for what?
>>
>>385145941
If you're a masochist and outright want to deal with horseshit like limited color ranges and overscan among others, knock yourself out, but otherwise stick with the other display interfaces.

DisplayPort > DVI >>>> dogshit > HDMI (VGA is a bit of a special case these days and doesn't really in the same comparison)
>>
>>385142506
Just so you know, don't follow this advice because this is just to fix black levels in case your monitor doesn't receive a full range signal. You lose a lot of detail if you do this instead of sending the full range signal to your monitor by doing what OP does.
>>
>>385154543
No idea dude, you must have fucked something up.
