It works in Dark Souls, because literally the point of the game and theme is to be oppressive and punishing. To repeat the level multiple times, because you can quickly get better at it. It's also bearable because the longer you play, the less impactful it becomes, you stop needing levels.
But it's a shit mechanic on it's own. What the fuck is it doing in Nier Automata? Stop putting it in games where it doesn't belong.
