Because music now appeals to a wider audience than classical music being just for the elite class that paid for it. So now it's not just pompus shit like just strings and can go for more emotions and actually give the player reference on scenes and events within the game. That's a very modern understanding that really only came up in the 19th century. It was Richard Wagner who put the art in the centre. Before that music was played in the purpose of dance or background music, clerical worship, etc. - opera was a place to socialise for the aristocracy.
