I won't play characters I think are bad just because I like them, but I don't have a hard on for tiers.

For instance, in Xrd, I don't play Baiken even thought I love the character. The motif is not worth suffering through all of her flaws. Instead, I play Axl, who isn't top tier, but is a character with weaknesses I am comfortable with and strengths I can take advantage of. I played Iron Fist in UMvC3 even though he was bottom five because his strengths were enough to keep me engaged.

favorites. some games mine are bottom, other times they're pretty up there.

I try to avoid characters that have to "work hard" to win with (USF4 Dee Jay, Hakan, GG Potemkin, Baiken, etc.) since it's clear that it goes beyond just knowing your character's combos, but you have to make, frankly, ridiculous, downright psychic reads to get the most out of the character, which screams weak design to me.

However, I do try to avoid basic newbie characters and stigmatized top tiers, as well. I just want a character that is technical without being ludicrously difficult to play. In GG, I play I-no, and in USF4 I played Juri.

I do believe that tiers do hold some credence, since it says a lot about what makes characters dominant within a game's design. For example, all of the S tier characters in GG either have the best neutral games, abusive oki, or both (see: Chipp, Raven, Johnny, Sin). Mid tier characters usually have a singular abusive strength (Millia, I-no mixups) and a notable flaw keeping them out of the top (middling defenses, weak neutral, Ky being a jack-of-all-trades).

A mix of both. I won't play, say, Raven in GG just because he's high tier because I hate his gameplay, but I also won't play Bullet in Blazblue because there's no way to justify playing a character that's that godawful no matter how much I like her.

i like to pick characters which hover around mid-high tier and look cool

i typically don't pick top tiers cos i feel like a tryhard and/or they get dumpstered in revisions and patches or low-bottom tier characters because i'm already bad enough at fighting games so i don't need an extra thing working against me

In BB I've always played Rachel no matter what. In MvC2 I always played Jin. In Smash (in b4 not FG) I always played Ganondork and Samus.

I like to play what ever floats my boat when I do happen to play games.

For example, I've always liked being a Pokemon Gym Leader by only using one type in a playthrough. My favorite type is ice, but it's shit especially after the hail nerf. Ghost would probably be second, but ghost types are a little rare, especially early game. So I go with my third choice of bug since Volcarona's a fucking beast and Scolipede is sexy as fuck.

Unfortunately there are rare times where I falter and feel like I have to drop a character because of what "balance" has done to them, but it's only happened once or twice. If a character is changed to be weaker or stronger that's fine, but if they're changed in such a way that they're not fun to play anymore, that's just shit. I never pick based on tier lists.

Depends on the game. Fighting games give you a shit ton more leeway to do this than other genres, due to player interaction often being a greater deciding factor than mechanical interaction.
Of course you occasionally get characters that are just straight up irredeemable, or top tiers that can minimize the importance of player interaction.

For beating the single player story or playing casually with friends, you can easily only use your favorites.
