To this day, is it still the only single player open world game with a living world that doesn't revolve around the player? I can't think of any other.
>>
>>385099252
Isn't Stalker also kinda sorta like that?
>>
>>385099252
Well, it is kind of, but it just so happens, at least on the higher difficulties, that if the player doesn't do anything, the galaxy will be overrun by the alliums/robots/pirates/whoever turns to be the main antagonist of the game.
Anyhow, I still get what you mean. The feeling and the atmosphere of a universe living by itself, something quite opposite to the No man sky or other similiar bullshit.
>>
>>385099252
The X series of games
>>
>>385099252
Doesn't it feel the same in the GTA series and quite a few other open-world games (although 99% of open-world games are shit, nonetheless)?
>>
>>385099935
Nothing really changes in GTA, moving parts are just a decoration.
>>
>>385099506
The coalition will actually liberate the galaxy even without players help on easy and normal, although at the end you are still gonna be needed to defeat either Mahpella/Dominator Master AIs
>>385099935
Criminals serving prison sentences when captured by the officials temporarily removing them from the game, military planning and executing strike missions in order to free currently captured star systems, economy changes due to vast amount of traders and stuff like that, there are a lot of things that happen without player even noticing it, although obviously this is still not perfect simulation.
>>
Man i lament the death of russian gamedev. This is one of my favourite games ever and i still think it's some of the most brilliant genre blends i've ever seen in games, not even counting what it did with the game world.
>>
>>385101298
True. Some of them remain though, like IcePickLodge. But since they need to make living they have to turn to mobile shit-tier games that casuals throw money at.
However, I still believe that some new talents will rise from this indie-games-fad, since the novelty is usually a selling point of these games, making people forget or disregard obvious underdevelopments in other domains. And Russian devs were always quite good at making something unique and cool.
So I still retain a degree of optimism.

Well it wasn't some random Russian games but one of the finest Russian devs did produce. Soundtrack is on par with the whole game, especialy text quests which are amazing, and quite entertaining even in the worst parts.
The ending scene with the incredible music gave me goosebumps the first time I've seen it, and it still excites me.
>>
>>385102020
I don't think your attempt and ERPing belongs to this thread.
>>
>>385102102
I actually remember playing it at a friend's house when I was a kid a whole while back and it blew my mind.

Bought it for 2 BGN a year ago and I never excpected the music to be THIS good
>>
>>385102440
I'm wondering if the music would feel this good if not for the countless hours spent in the game traversing the space, planning routes and trying to solve the puzzles. But then I think that I liked the OSTs from Final Fantasy even though I've never played it, same goes for Chrono Trigger music, even though I went through the game recently with an emulator on Android and I like it.
So I think the music in Space Rangers is good even not counting the personal liking of it because of the time spent in-game.

Oh by the time I listened to the OST I hadn't played the game for more than 5hours, but goddamn IMO it's the only soundtrack that captures the vastness, emptyness, mystery and intrigue of space. I mean yeah you have the Mass Effect OST and other games, but they never capture that feeling of colossal expanse, y'know?

Space mudslims best race.
>>
>>385102910
I can imagine. They usually try to portray the space in a musical way by using some synthetic strings and pads and other long and quite low sounds, but this gets boring quite fast. This energetic and soulful music of Space Rangers just makes it the right way.

>>385103112
Have no idea to be honest. GOG versions are pretty fine, and should cost a nickel. As for the DLC there were none so it's not like you are gonna miss anything.
>>
>>385103152
They were not muslims, more like space uberjews. There were several references to their jewishness in the game, but I think it didn't translate quite well in the english version if you played one.
However there's no clear connection, so they're more like a mix of semitic nations, and that includes both the arabs and jews.

>>385103112
Honestly I would reccomend getting either original sequel, or the "Reboot" edition, which added just a bit of content to the vanilla game, as opposed to HD remake which really dumps a lot of stuff to the point of making it really overwhelming.

>Space Rangers HD: A War Apart
As far as I know, yes. It's like an add-on to the original Space Rangers 2, with a side-campaign in addition to the original fighting the dominators campaign.
So yes, get it if you can.
>>
>>385103658
War Apart is a meme expansion that was done with the help of the fans, apparently. The only serious change is a new fraction of pirates, as if getting assraped by dominators wasn't harsh enough. I personally recommend playing Space Rangers 1, then vanilla 2.

redpill me with a quick rundown on the difference between Space Rangers 2 and HD.
>>
>>385104167
I heard that it was rebalanced in War Apart, but in vanilla all you have to do is build robots armed with four rocket launchers and couple of repair ones to support them, and direct control feature is borderline broken because you can seriously exploit both the extra range on weapons that it gives and the stupidity of the ai.
>>
>Amplitude get Space Rangers licence
or
>Elemental Games get Endless licence
>>
>>385104167
Well, it's just that some of the maps are quiite difficut. So it requires quite a good timing and if you do some stupid things be ready to restart it and make it the right way this time.
Remember getting quite desperate in some of the missions, but I was always able to beat it after a couple of hours.
But you get a great feeling of achievement after all.

>>385104327
It didn't always work because of the lack of resources and AI being quite agressive sometimes.
But yes direct control helps sometimes. However you can't do much with one robot doing base-to-base shooting while being swarmed with a pack of enemies. So yeah, planning, agressive playing and a good reaction is what you need to finish some of those maps.
>>
>>385104373
>Elemental Games
It's ogre, most of the original team left and made King's Bounty, Elemental holds rights to Space Rangers but did nothing with it.
>>
>>385104167
>and the rewards aren't even that good
You get far less money and shittier artifacts if you ask for better armor/more reinforcements, plus game tracks how long it took you to finish the mission, so in order to get best payment you need to rush down the ai as fast as you can.

I feel like this is how open world games should really be, but boy was I bitter.

How do you get Keller to fuck off without a fight? I tried talking to him but the "what if you just go away" dialogue ends when he asks if I have the authority to speak for all the Coalition races and the only option is to say no
>>
>>385107063
You need to choose right dialogue choices iirc. Something-something about research and klissans.
>>
>>385104167

This is usually the case if you didn't figure out how the (mini)game works, which is fair enough, given that game makes little effort to teach you.

90% of the missions were very mild, now and again you'd have to restart, but usually not even that.

There were a few extremely difficult ones, i think 3 total, that would most likely require multiple restarts. Out of those i best remember the four laser turrets one, that one was horrible. But again, very few actually presented a challenge if you understood the mechanics of it.

No love for text quests in the thread? Which one is your favorite?

Mine would probably have to be running the vidya-review journal. There was also one form SR1 in which you had to live through the same day twice due to time-travel shenanigans, i have no idea why it was never transfered into the second game.

You have to suggest for him to "research" klissan instead, if he asks you about authority you've gone too far (and in the wrong direction)

although thinking on it, you did say "without a fight", i don't think you can do that. You have to beat him in hyperspace, then the proper communication starts.

I can't remember most of them. There was a haunted house, which was really a themepark, prison, that really fucking stupid one where you have to press the right button on a VCR remote and the bullshit RNG tournament, Elus
