And while there is nothing stopping people from making a spiritual sequel to SMAC (as evident by those there were made) they do own enough to be able to sue should something be too similar.

unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, since its EA), since they dont own the copyright completely they cant make a sequel either or even copy it too similarly since they can get sued by the other copyright holder.

SMAC has humorous moments but that doesn't make it black comedy. The game isn't afraid of making a joke from time to time but the focus isn't on the humour.
