Gen 3 was the biggest gaming disappointment of my childhood. So much so i still only played My red and gen 2 carts until the DS took out the compatibility.
Honen is such an ugly region, filled with a wide variety of pokemon i don't like.

I just remember being a kid, getting saphire at targert, and playing on the ride home. I saw the new art style and sprites for the game, and then the starters, and just thought "i really don't like this". I asked my mom to pick my starter cause i didn't really care for any of them. I think RS were supposed to be very different from the way the final product turned out. Stuff like the Latias/Blaziken hybrid, unused music and some trainer classes, and the cry data ordering come to mind.
It was kind of weird how one NPC brings up how May and Norman came from Johto, but nothing ever comes out of it. I think Emerald even omitted that line.

Totodile seems like it would be more appropriate as the rival's stolen starter, given its violent appearance and nature. As a kid, it always bugged me when I picked totodile for my starter and the edgelord rival was saddled with the flowersaurus for the entire game
