The stock market and real estate in gtav is both unfun and broken as fuck. The only thing interesting to spend money on in V is clothes and modding cars, except you are stuck with each characters shitty personal cars and can't mod one you actually want, because it will disappear if you crash it or turn off the game

This. It's such fucking bullshit that you can't switch out the default vehicles for each character as you wished. Or at least have a spare slot for you to pick your own car since the default vehicles are pretty much tied to each character's personality. Keeping a suped up Sabre GT shouldn't be so annoying. The impound lot isn't a good enough crutch either. Thank god for mods.

They relegated too much of the characters' more 'human' traits to hangouts and optional shit. When you play only the missions, everyone seems angry and neurotic as fuck. SA didn't have hangouts at all and didn't suffer this, since all traits are shown in the mission cutscenes and phone calls. IV had dates and hangouts but they achieved a nice balance between showing the characters' personality in the mission cutscenes, dialogues and phone calls with the dates and hangouts being just more content on top of that.

Honestly, I loved VC's system where story progression was locked behind buying businesses. It gave you a reason to do the side content rather than ignore it like you do with every other open world game.

spent more time fucking around with the physics and car damage or doing shoot outs in the hospital/fast food joints than doing missions; also did a John Wick style playthrough where i dressed Niko in a suit and only killed mofos with headshots or occasionally i'd shoot them in the foot so they'd fall from cover and then headshot them

I think they tried with Michael to make a parody of Max Payne (I looked up the IMDB page, my thoughts were correct on this, they actively tried to parody Payne with Michael, not only that you can buy him a Hawaii Shirt (and only him) like in MP3, you can also cut him bald and get him a beard. His special ability is slow mo shootout (like Payne), he prefers Whiskey (like Payne), he has a husky voice (like Payne) and even some missions are direct references (like the one were he saves his family for invaders, unlike Payne, Michael succeed)), so they made him a lot more whinier than Payne in MP3.
Also I think that the whole game tried to be "Wolf of Wall Street" with guns. They never pretend that they are good guys and they have a extremely lust for money and success, like Jordan Belfort they have no really positive attributes.
