If possible, get a SNES Classic (comes out in September, stock for the system may be very low)
If not, get him a Switch with BoTW and Splatoon/Mario Kart 8
If XBOX is preferred, get the Xbox One S along with any E-T rated games

But honestly I'd get him a 3DS. Good library and hackable, so you don't have to buy anything. Maybe a decent PC too so he won't feel left out if his friends want to play Minecraft or whatever kids are into these days.
