Play fighting games, or RTS, or bullet hell, or all three. They'll last you for the rest of your life. I would add belt scrollers into that category but fighting games killed that genre before it could reach its full potential. Unlike the other three it may eventually lose its worth. Rhythm games might qualify, might not.

This is why I can't get into videogames unless they are on sale for cheap. Call me jewish or poor (i'll own up to the latter) but I can't justify that kind of spending I can save up a bit more and buy something that will give me hundreds of hours of use or even productivity (like art programs or whatnot)

The only video games that feel like that are the ones that depend more on story than gameplay. A game like Super Mario Bros. 3, DoDonpachi, or Elite Beat Agents can be played pretty much forever.

Most people eventually grow jaded of cinematic action-adventure AAA console games and drift towards "pure gameplay" genres (rhythm, shmup, fighting) or "pure story" games (interactive fiction, adventure, visual novel).

Don't know how reliable Steam is. I picked up Grid for a dollar and I had 4 hours played. Played another session for a couple hours and it went BACKWARDS to 3 hours.
