1 was worth playing if you love 2 or on its own, but 2 was all around a direct upgrade. They both manage to balance themselves in a way GTA started to fail at doing. Able to poke fun and be funny while getting you actually invested and sometimes feeling bad for characters when things got serious. The gameplay was solid enough to get the player actually interested in the city around you, with lots of details that you still find new of despite repeated playthroughs. 3 threw that all out the window and is largely considered the worst. Not wrong. They made a lot of questionable decisions making that.

4 is in itself a fine enough game, roughly on par with 1 I think, but stops playing or feeling anything like a Saints game. Closer to Crackdown if you ever played that. It also wraps up or fixes a lot of story left over from 1 and 2 that 3 ignored completely or ruined, though some things are never really addressed. Gat Out of Hell as a spinoff might answer more things but I never bothered playing it.

Saints Row 3 was a shitty version of 2 so I never bothered with the fourth one.

Red Faction takes place in the year 2110, so no, it wouldn't limit games. All they had to do was say that Ultor was bought out by someone from the 3rd Street Saints. Boom, still be able to have a continuity.

Saints Row 2 is my favorite "GTA" style game. I'd put it slightly higher than GTA V. SR 3 was a pretty big disappointment, but I still enjoyed it. 4 was a return to form even though there was literally one enemy to fight the entire game.

I'm just wondering, how could they even do a SR 5? Would they go back to a more GTA style or continue to make you an unstoppable God?

SR2 is sillly as fuck. Its "serious" scenes are largely ham-fisted and silly themselves in how they don't 100% commit. Carlos' death is nowhere near as sad as it's made out to be since you hardly interact with him enough to make his death meaningful. They didn't have the balls to actually show Aisha's death and the aftermath. They didn't have the balls to show Maero's toxic tattoos fucking up his face. Etc., etc. Time and again the "serious" scenes fall completely flat.

If they had continued to just churn out games like Saints Row 2, by now, it would have been dull and have overstayed its welcome. Now they've gone so far over the top, there is actually nothing they can do but reset the status quo which they literally did at the end of Gat Out of Hell so, ironically, they might be going right back to what you want anyway.
