It's a slippery slope though~

Future Tone on ps4 is the most comprehensive in the series, but doesn't have the same art style and gameplay as f/f2nd/x. I'd say grab the demos for f and x and the base game for Future Tone and see where you want to go from there.

I just couldn't get into Vocaloid games, I enjoyed playing the game on the PSP while I'm on the toilet. But I didn't enjoy it when I played it on my PS4. Though it's been years between the time I played the PSP game and the PS4 game, so maybe I just lost interest in the genre.

How is it foolish? FT was $35 the other day. That's about as cheap as you're gonna get F2nd. And you get 180+ more songs than F2nd for that price. DX is going to have 237 songs, which is CT, FS, and all three Encore packs plus Ghost Rule.

Even if you got the full base FT at $35, the DLC packs would run you up another $30.
So that savings on the base game is worthless compared to buying DX.

One thing you should note is that FT is a port of the arcade cabinet project diva, the note charts are not designed for a controller, you're meant to press multiple face-buttons at the same time and most interesting gameplay comes from holding down multiple buttons while using your other hand to keep tapping.
To do this on a controller, they cheated and let you macro buttons to specific combos.
Also no edit mode or diva room and no patty cake.

F2nd is a great place to start. It is, in my opinion, the definitive core Diva experience.

F2nd.

This is a basic Diva game with all the regular series features.

I can play all these good-ass songs which I'll be able to return to in FT later (which will help me acclimate to FT because knowing the songs means A LOT).

And the game is flush with content and a proper challenge that can carry me for the months leading up to FTDX's release, while I practice, collect modules and parts, and acquire proficiency. My thumbs get faster and I understand dual wielding, etc.

FT's mechanics are hard for PS4 players because they weren't designed around a PS4 controller. Multiple hold buttons will never not be strange. It's the entire reason why macros exist in the settings.

So I think jumping into FT as a new player, who doesn't even know the basics of timing or technique, might be a little unwise.

I jumped into FT as a new player back when it came to NA in January. I had moderate experience with rhythm games but hard mode crushed me at first. Eventually I practiced and practiced, and cleared the entire setlist on hard. But then hard became too easy, so I moved onto extreme. And then I got crushed by extreme. Now, 7 almost 8 months later, I'm clearing 10 star Ex-Extreme songs with relative consistency. I loved the game so much I spent a shitton of money on Rin merch, and now I'm finishing up my custom arcade controller after importing buttons and getting a shitton of help from /jp/ and close friends with designing/building it. F2nd is basically obsolete right now, unless your life depended on being able to headpat and get friend zoned by the Crypton 6, playing Kagerou Daze, and playing edit mode songs of questionable quality. You're putting way too much importance behind a physical release that literally only adds one extra song and a handful of modules.

we currently don't know if DX is coming to NA, if it does, then you can go ahead and disregard a good chunk of what I'm saying, but even then. buying f2nd is ~$20, and then buying DX will bring that up to ~$80 considering games usually sell for $60 here. so at most, buying f2nd and then waiting (if it comes to NA) for DX and buying that, compared to buying future tone + bundles saves you $10

Future Tone is a bit awkwardly split. The base application is free and comes with 2 songs. Then there's 2 large song packs, one is Future Sound that has 127 songs and the other one is Colorful Tone which has 95 songs. They are basically the maingame, when you buy the Future Tone bundle which should be like 55 bucks or something you get those 3 together. If you then want additional stuff there's a season pass. You don't need to buy anything else, especially not the unlock key.

Because the note charts are designed assuming you have four very big buttons very close to each other that you press with two hands, fingers if necessary (like combining holds). You can reach the slide panel up top without letting go of a hold.

On PS4, you have two thumbs.
Without using macros, a four-hold is already sorta awkward.
But then you have shit like holding one button, while all three other buttons are flying in rapidly, but half of your input ability is taken up by that first hold, what happens when a second hold shows up?
Not to mention having to leave the primary input to enter slide notes (because L1/R1 won't suffice when you have double rights/lefts)

It's fucking awkward. There is a very, very good reason why macros exist.

That said, fast notes are easier on a DS4, as you can drum them with a duplicate set of buttons.
