Disgaea 2 had a kind of meh story, but some of the best characters in the series. Adell doesn't get enough credit as a protagonist because everyone writes him off as a one note fightsexual protagonist. Even though His character arc shows that it's all just him living in denial. The whole "fair fight and my family is my family regardless of a lack of blood relation" mentality was just him living in denial to keep his repressed memories, repressed. He knew full well who his parents were because he asked a clan of clairvoyant succubi who they were, and they told him after it was implied that they either raped him and/or beat him within an inch of his life. Having Rozy as a devils advocate helps him face his own past. His determination became legit as a result and he was able to save Rozalin as a result.

In Disgaea 2 and 4, Prinnies were basically all-out offense units with the drawback that you couldn't throw them. In 4 in particular, for a solid few chunks of the game, Prinnies were the undisputed damage dealing kings, if you could position them right.
D1 and DD2 actually treated them as joke units objectively worse than almost anything else.
D3 and D6 prinnies inhabit a shitty limbo, where they are about on-par with other "weak" monster classes, just with the added drawback of being unable to be thrown.
Throwing prinnies has never been good, unless they were enemy prinnies. I think 5 even included an evility that returns the dispatch used by a thrown prinny, and it still wasn't worthwhile.

Otherwise, in general, Monsters make effective generalists and "core" units. While a Fighter's express job is to deal and tank physical damage, a Fighter-Esque monster's job is a much more broad "Go that way and deal with what's over there". A given monster tends to be more durable than its humanoid counterpart within a role, save the dedicated humanoid tanks, and a handful of more "quirky" monsters.
Further, their method of acquiring special skills means that maintaining a monster costs less mana, and makes them all the more effective at roles like healing or casting, where they get free skills a humanoid doesn't get an answer for.

Thus, the ideal way to use a monster is as a tanky version of what you would otherwise have a humanoid do.
Then, when your monster is almost dead or out of SP (Remember, their Skill Ranks can be noticeably higher since they will only have 1 or 2 to manage instead of 6), use Magichange to give that monster a second life in making a humanoid an utter badass for a few turns in the thick of it.

Is this the single most overpowered unique character in the series? I just beat 5's story and entered postgame. Once you get her evility that increases her stats by 1% per unit of height, she's a fucking monster, especially with her Overload.

Usalia rivals Flonne (Both D1 and DD2, impressively) as the most overpowered story character in Disgaea, but since in D3 and D4 Vita, and D5 you can get the DLC characters at the start of the game, there are better uniques.
Pirohiko is fucking broken as shit in Disgaea 4, and can let you tackle post-game content FAR earlier than you should be able to, and is the key to early powelevelling using the Netherbattle Tournament as well (Can you say break level 1000 in under an hour from a fresh file?)
D4 Marona also lets you pull some shenanigans that trivialize a number of story maps and X-Dimension maps.
Pram absolutely shits over Disgaea 5 if you use her in the story. Just deploy her, park her somewhere, and you win as random Ice spells hit enemies between turns.
Zetta's base stats in D5 are just silly. Naked Zetta will have stats far, far above equipped characters of his same level, and his aptitudes are great too. He also gets Badass Overdrive surprisingly early, and his Overload is almost as destructive to the main story as Usalia's.
Again in D5, Metallia gets Tera spells at like, level 40 or something, and has really high Int, SP, and gets to come back to life once.
And her Overload will regularly clear the whole map.


Usalia is notable since she's currently tied for the best character to beat Baal, and is key to speedrunning Disgaea 5, playing a key role in beating LoC Baal in something like 12 hours from a fresh file.

In terms of evilities, you want attack/damage over stats. Every character does need to get their +100% to stats eventually, but there are many ways to do that.
Purgatory (Dark Knight Evility) is the closest thing in the game to a mandatory evility. Any character that wants to deal damage needs that evility, the only exception being the Armor Knight, who has more important mandatory evilities.
All generics sans the Sage, Armor Knight, and Asagi are only for vanity. The Sage is for grinding, not actual combat, and the Armor Knight is for using Galahad's Shield, alongside the Swift Stance (I think, the one that makes you always counter while defending) and Forced Counter to begin 40 hit counter-comboes on-demand, and supercharge Rage Charge, Impact Charge, and Fighting Spirit. Asagi gets a free +40ish% to her stats for being Asagi, but her innate evility can fuck you over.

Zetta and Marjorita are the very best units in the game. Zetta takes more time to grind, Marjorita requires you to use Etna and Laharl's Overloads before important fights.
Red Magnus is also good, since he gets +80% stats just for being in a maxed-out Foot Soldier Squad, as is Asagi who gets something like 40% Stats from the Asagi Squad, plus 20% from FSS, meaning she only has to make up 40% through evilities and such.
Sicily is a ridiculous tank, able to indefinitely survive against literally anything with the proper set-up.
Zetta+Petta's Overloads let you deploy a whopping 10 additional units. If you pass the bill to deploy 20 units, use Petta, then double dip on Zetta and Zeroken's evilities, that means you get 36 units for your maximum. Giving Zeroken Happy Song, Cursed Dance, and Idol Song means all of your other characters get a free +35% to stats, and deal 21% more damage after 2 Overloads.

Disgaea DS runs at 30fps and due to the DS' screens has a much lower resolution so battles are really zoomed in. All music was turned to MIDI and most voice acting was removed. Item names were also shortened, and the number of total units you can have and item storage is lower.

DS port has a bunch of bugs, some of which affect gameplay negatively. If you use Thursday's self destruct skill, kill any units with it and Thursday would be to level up from that exp, the game will crash. During one of Etna Mode's maps if you watch the cutscene the background from that scene will get stuck in the foreground once the battle begins, making it impossible to see anything on the main screen during that fight. If your money reaches the cap (and this is really easy to do once you start doing the optional maps) it will roll into negatives, making it impossible to heal at the hospital until you earn enough money to get into positive numbers again. Putting the system into sleep mode during a cutscene can freeze the console. Also diagonal throwing was removed for some reason.

The gameplay is definitely there, though.

The basic plot of 5 is very comparable to the Fake-Zenon plot of 2.
That's the issue, though. D2's plot was never really about Fake-Zenon. The devil, as it were, is in the details of D2's plot.
The little things in Disgaea 2 that seem like odd details on their own, but if taken with the full context of the story, tell the full tale.
For example, the realization that the summoning ritual at the beginning of the game worked exactly as intended.

Fuck, even as far as a comparison between Void and Fake-Zenon is concerned, I think Zenon's got the upper hand.
Void was the super strong guy with a side quest.

Priere and Laharl are the only MC's in the series to have canonically beaten Baal. It is questionable if Priere actually defeated Baal, or just fought Baal to a point that he didn't want to fight anymore, while Laharl is confirmed to have beaten him, and is hounding him through the universe.
Prime Valvatorez might be a contender, but since he exists in a lore vacuum, we can't really say.

Killia is an odd one. Similarly, Disgaea 5 exists in a lore vacuum.
As far as I can pull out of my ass, the average power level of Disgaea 5 seems a lot lower.
Another consideration is that Killia was about on-par with, if not decently above Christo, who is likely a young Lamington.
It can be assumed that Lamington has gained power since then, and Laharl basically soloed Lamington, though it's also possible Lamington didn't go all-out in that fight.

Wood Golem. Bar none, tanking is the name of D2's game, and a stronk enough Wood Golem with enough lovers is basically unkillable.
For ingame use, the Flora Beast is magnificent, the Prinny hits surprisingly hard, and while you get them late, the Bone Dragon is very strong as well.
If playing DHD, Great Wyrms/Ifrits are OP if you spam them for their ability, they have the best Attack Stats and Aptitude in the game, and their fire-centric moveset isn't even that big of a deal. They are almost as good as the invinci-Wood Golem, and take a fraction of the effort.

Taro and Zetta are good too.

They're not the best, but I always did like the Nekomata line a lot. At a certain point, I made sure to get like four of them as my main force, and they kicked ass early to mid game. Those fucking lasers were great for cc since they don't need any extra squares to stand on or anything. Just a pure fucking STR-based laser, and the cat attack was also great for raw DPS.

The first game is considerably harder and doesn't have nearly as much cheesy mechanics like the new games. For example taking out the geo symbols in the Mid Boss stage was impossible in a single turn, unless you've grinded. And that would mean losing one or more units to the x6 boosted archers.

I just binge played through D1 and D2 recently, and I can tell that D2 is already MASSIVELY more casual than the original. Of course, people who started playing with later game would go around saying how the games are braindead easy, because it's true for their first Disgaea game.

The archers have a range of 4. The starting area has enough rooms for you to take 2 units to defend against the ghosts in front, then 2 in the back to wait a turn, then throw one and head for the symbols.

You can also just go around the right side. Takes longer but the warriors in the middle won't move unless you're near them, Midboss can't reach the edges of the map and/or you can have someone tank his special if you want to waste his mp and then he'll keep trying to follow you but has like 4 MV. Eventually you reach the symbols, kill the ghosts, kill Midboss and take the warriors one by one.

Which isn't needed at all because the only units boosted by those are the mage and the archer, and they won't move from their spots unless thrown/pushed, and there's no turn limit. You don't really have to clear the symbols in a single turn.

Hell if you really want to negate the effects in a single turn, you can throw 2 units with the first fist skill, punch the archer and mage out of those tiles, then place someone else there, possibly the fist users if you threw them from the base.

The whole point of the map is to teach the player that charging forward trying to kill everything asap won't work every time, and to learn to pay attention to enemies' range and geo symbol effects.

Because compared to most SRPG - Disgaea is easy.
It's not the easiest SRPG out there, SRW is pretty braindead. But let's be honest, Disgaea can be tricky cause you can get yourself into a lot of bad situations. But if you just stick to story characters, and focus on them - all main story in the game becomes pretty easy.
If you start creating tons of characters - then yeah, you might find yourself in the trouble

In the demon lord story mode, the darkness in prier constantly tries to take over to become a demon lord, but the thing is, prier's light as a human keeps intervening and seeping out, to the point where even demon lord prier has good intentions (she just wants to be accepted and save croix from the dark prince and thinks the power of the holy maiden isn't good enough compared to what she can do) and depending on how much you actively seek out the representation of prier's light, she manages to achieve symbiosis with both her sides.

In the end, it's a lot like the situation with Eclair. Prier's was just born out of desperation for power instead of resentment.

But the way Prier is represented in disgaeas (sans 5) suggest this isnt canon. Instead the alternate ending where Prier beats her friends to an inch of their life, kills Croix and Noir and basically dies inside seems more likely.

It doesn't matter what the fuck is happening, Valzy will carry it.
It doesn't matter if you are handed the most needlessly outlandish plot in existence, Valvatorez will drive it home.

People have a complex relationship with Fuka. On the one hand, you have people who don't realize that Fuka actually HAS to stick to her muh dream shtick or she dies, and hate her. On the other hand, you have people who are fully aware of this, but still hate her.
Then you have people who hate her for reasons similar to why some people hate Seraphina. Fuka's presence ruined Desco.

Most of these groups agree on one thing. Fuka is for intense, bruise-inducing hatefucking.

Witch and the Hundred Knight has almost as good a story, but meh gameplay and the smaller plots can get boring.
Maybe streamable, maybe not, but you should play it regardless.

Yes. Both D3 and D4 are worth playing. Starting with 4 means going back to 3 will be painful, but starting with 3 means starting with the less-polished game.
You will be slightly less overwhelmed if you start with 3 though.
