The sticky bomb placement at the beginning is what you want to do, it's setting up to insta-gib the soldier as he backpedals into it and hopefully get the medic as well, but he overshot it and the soldier was smart enough to know not to backpedal into that shit. I understand the basic concept but I must be doing something wrong. The best I can do is semi-reliably jump up to a high or far away platform, and I take like 35 damage doing it. Every video tutorial I've seen if just like "hold jump, crouch and fire at the same time, practice aiming for awhile, and you should be able to fly across the map and market gardener people in no time".

Depends on the map. Most of the older vanilla maps are a massive pain in the ass to rocket jump on because they're not designed with it in mind. Lots of chokepoints and sharp geometry makes it difficult to keep a jump going. Compare that to a map like cp_process where there is lots of open space and ramps that make it easy for even a f2p soldier to go flying across the map with a bit of practice.

Don't try to do the fancy jumps first. Instead look at your favorite maps and come up with your own jumps to get from spawn to the front quickly. You have a lot of freedom when it comes to rocket jumps you don't have to copy the pros if your jumps are "good enough". Consistency > Speed

If you want a good pub map to practice on play badwater and upward. They're some of my favorite maps to jump on and there are a lot of possibilities.

She works great, but she relies on good team communication. Her hack has some killer clutch support, and really when you come to her with the idea that she's not really a damage character, and more a support role, you realize how valuable she can be.

She can set up really good teamfight initiations, if she can get behind enemy lines, and her health pack hack, with the right mindset, can be supplemented for an extra healer. She gets her ult quickest (Than anyone else in the game) if her team actually uses her health packs. Having an EMP every fight is a pretty intimidating thing, and it nullifies enough things that it can completely destroy a wipe attempt.

I think she works. But team communication sucks if you don't have at least 3 friends to play with.

Replace key with a button of your choosing, mouse4 or mouse5 are good if you have extra mouse buttons.
if you don't like having to noclip over and over you can also use getpos and setpos and bind that to a key to instantly teleport you to a spot.

If you're taking on Soldiers from the front as a Pyro you're generally doing it wrong

You morons conflate counters with balance too much, which is a lapse in logic when you try to apply it to a versatile class like Soldier which is good overall but doesn't particularly excel at anything other than rocketjumping which is not the deciding factor in most fights unless you're really fucking skilled at it, at which point you deserve it. Soldier doesn't have much in the way of hard counters because there's not much to counter. He's just a dude with a rocket launcher, he can offset his weaknesses at a cost (rocket launcher reloading times, sacrificing health for speed/gaining height through rocketjumping). Any moron can decently play the role Heavy is intended for, but much like a comp Sniper, a skilled Soldier is nightmarish.

What makes you think exploiting advantageous positions is unique to Soldiers? A Soldier can't camp the high ground forever anyways on grounds related to limited ammo and chokepoints being able to move to other sections of the map where the high ground isn't necessarily always present or safely accessible. Nor are Soldiers with the high-ground the end-all be-all once you start thinking with teams. Try spreading your liberty and freedom after a Sniper has you in his sights, or a pocketed Heavy simply tanking your shit like it's nothing. To complain that a Soldier being able to effectively utilize a high ground advantage more is grounds for nerfing is silly. Just because a class excels in a certain situation doesn't mean they need to be entirely changed for the sake of balance, nor does it mean they are impossible to deal with to begin with. It's like trying to complain about getting owned by Snipers when you enter the open if you are that serious about high ground being an instant-win.

Fix the problems with pl and ad maps so that defense classes are useful more often.
Defense classes are terrible on 5cp because the gamemode demands versatility but in pl and ad where one team is always defending now you can run them fulltime.

Like give the pyro a sidegarb that lets him store projectiles, make him a huge projectile counter. Or a side garb that lets him suck players towards him so he can kill them.

give heavy more tools to allow him to hold down a position better. like a shield or something that stops 100 damage and any damage after that (like a headshot would only hit the shield)

itd be hard to balance and I don't think anyone here has a golden idea. you'd need people that actually made the game work with people that know what they're talking about.

The strategy for Pyro is literally W + LMB. Sure, you'll get fucked by anyone who's played the game for more than a femtosecond but it's really easy to play and good for new players.

If you're close enough to deal 100 damages per rocket, heavy is close enough to shred you the moment you peak out.

Even then, if just camp at this magical high ground, demo can sticky trap you and either kill you or force you to move out. Pyro can use his flaregun and varients to keep dealing chip damages and force you to go scavenge for health packs. Scout can get to the same high ground soldier is on and kill him.

Heavy needs to be faster but not THAT faster like what the GRU does, I think giving the Heavy the default walking speed of the Soldier would do the trick, and nerf the GRU a little.

I mean holy shit the Heavy is too fucking slow, the 2nd slowest class after him it's like the Demo and Sniper, and they aren't even slow. As for the Pyro I don't know, remove him from the game.

so faster spindown and actual usable secondary/melee loadouts with thought put into how to apply them in an organized match ie steakvich rollouts/a realistic reason to ever use the shotgun
in the same vein the minigun should also greatly benefit from staying spun up so he has to weigh the risk/reward of swapping off in any situation and so that he has a real, exploitable vulnerability window when swapping back to the minigun and spinning it up

and the pyro needs a lot more than that
but the degreaser being the identity of the class is the main issue, stock needs to be not just usable but good and unique in its niche (cleave damage/movement control, NOT afterburn) so that the degreaser and """combos""" dont even need to exist

because the situations you're referring to are mostly 1v1s, which is rarely the case in TF2 unless you're a moron, a Spy, or a Scout going fast. See what good high ground does by standing on the aluminium sheet house on the second round of Dustbowl as a defender. There's way more to these situations and variables in question than 'high ground = win' than George Lucas would have you believe. You can easily test it out for yourself to see where it gets you instead of arguing theoretical bullshit like some academic, but something tells me you're not the bestest Soldier to have ever lived.

I just got back into TF2 this month and I'm playing a bit on casual servers because the only way to play competitive is to either give Valve money or my goddamn phone number and I don't understand why some people sperg out over capping on Hightower. Usually it was a 2fort server but sometimes a rotation of the stock maps were played.
