Will Supergiant deliver again? The song they released is not that great and some of the characters look really bad.

I have a feeling it'll be another Transistor where I love it but most people won't be able to get into it as much as Bastion.

I think most people just want them to make Bastion again instead of trying new things. Like, Pyre seems like some kind of visual novel/sports game. That probably won't appeal to most people in the same way that Bastion did.

Technology has advanced to the point where the current setting has every aspect of its reality subject to the whims of the inhabitants. Since nothing has any permanance and requires no effort to change, a small group of people feel that this is robbing meaning from different aspects of the people's lives. So they decide to change things by absorbing the most influential architects of reality into what is essentially the keystone for the mechanism that creates the world based on the will of the people, to make a stable world that has some sense of purpose and meaning in it. They try to absorb Red into this, but her boyfriend/lover/whatever takes the hit that was meant for her and they escape with the transistor. Without the transistor, the Camerata can't control the process, which starts wiping away reality. Everyone dies.
>>
>>385016745
The gameplay looks fun, it is one of the most original "arena" kind of game in the last years. I'm more worried about the narrative/artsy aspects of the game to be honest.
The characters look like they were ripped off straight out of the cover of a young adult fantasy book for girls. Even this concept of teams representing personality quirks looks like it belongs to one of those books trying to replicate the success of Harry Potter.

The issue with Transistor WAS that it tried to copy the feel of Bastion instead of making a different game, actually. They went as far as to whore it out with a "lol narrator guis remember bastion??" meme, which was entirely unnecessary.

>>
>>385018049
Please, join OP, and explain what was so good about Transistor's story.

Bastion's story had a choice (actually, a few choices) in the end. Transistor was literally "hurr red run, okay, now kick that guy's who we only heard of a few times ass, okay now die, the end"
>>
>>385017080
The story didn't feel like it was about nothing, to me. My only real criticism with the story is that it didn't flesh out the world enough from before everything went to shit. It kept all of its lore in function descriptions and forced you to intuit a lot about the world itself. And also those two Camerata offing themselves before you got to kill them, that felt like a cop out to me.

But aside from that, the story involving the main characters felt engaging and kept me interested the entire time. And the combat/mechanics felt really fresh to me at the time, and even though you could find a really broken combination of functions pretty easily (Void + Cull) it still felt like you had so many combinations to play with that it never got old for me. Also the music was great for the most part. Also also it has one of my favorite final bosses.

>>385017889
The narrator felt less like they were trying to copy Bastion and more like they had this very talented voice actor that they wanted to make use of and ended up giving him a similar role in order to do that. But aside from that and the forced overhead perspective, I didn't feel like there were too many similarities between the two games.
>>
>>385018229
It doesn't

>>
>>385017958
>This is the story.
No, that's the ending. And technically main characters aren't dead, they went inside whatever simulation is inside the Transistor. You gradually unveil the secrets of Cloudbank and Camerata for the entire game while trying to stop the Process from overtaking everything and you actually succeed.
>>
>>385018268
You have to win those basketball matches to redeem yourself from you deeds or some shit like that.
>>
>>385017958
You could be this reductive about literally any story

Everyone dying is the ending of the story. Red realizes that, in the end, she can't bring back any of the people already destroyed by the process. Even if she could use the Transistor to restore the city, it would be empty aside from her. So she decided it would be better to live within "The Country" instead.

Those characters look kickass, I don't know what you're talking about dude. The song isn't as good as the best from Bastion & Transistor, but I still like it.

Apparently - judging by a couple of reviews that are out - the basketball games are like religious rites, and the winning team gets to choose one of their teammates to not be exiled anymore and return to the world they came from. Your goal is to liberate everyone, but if you lose a game, the story keeps going and that's one less person you'll be able to set free. And the ones you do set free, you have to say goodbye to forever. So you're going to have to make a lot of tough choices. I think it sounds like a neat way to make your victories count.
>>
>>385018497
>I didn't feel like there were too many similarities between the two games.

Music, characters, art direction, and combat were all pretty different. I love both games and Darren Korb is honestly one of my favorite vidya soundtrack niggas.

At the same time the story and how it progressed felt very similar to Bastion. The Process and The Calamity were pretty damn similar. On top of that you have a narration from the same exact voice actor and the music vocals from the same people. I think that's enough similarities to warrant people comparing them.

Using the same guy (whose a fucking programmer) to essentially narrate the game again was about the only similarity, otherwise they did the exact opposite of what you'd expect for a small studio and made a follow-up that was nothing at all like their first game.

>>
>>385023023
>so much so it turned a lot of people off because they expected something simple
My problem with Transistor was that it didn't go far enough. I could tell they were afraid of confusing players with how complex it started getting. The game ended at a moment which I thought would be the halfway point at the latest. Fighting others with the exact same powers as yours right down to the time mechanics while your skillset gets exponentially more varied sounded really appealing, and then the credits rolled. You can't even unlock the full skilltree in a single playthrough. One of the only games where I wished multiplayer was shoehorned in so they could fully explore the challenge and depth of the combat system.
>>
>>385036264

as good as the games are in general, I still wonder if they'd be as popular if it wasn't for Darren's music.
>>
>>385036526

The story on Transistor was alright. His real problem was his lenght and having so few bosses.
>>
>>385036526
Bastion had good music but it's the narration that made it stand out, it sounds kind of generic now but it was a pretty unique type of storytelling back then. And I guess Transistor sold from being made by the same people and having Loghan being the main voice actor in the game once again.

so, from some of the reviews, with regard to the no game-over system:

winning rites causes party members to "ascend" to the living world and leave the party, while losing rites causes them to stay, but # of rites are limited so some will never ascend

>>385038343

Supergiant doesn't believe in hype trains. Their first reveal came with a functional demo for everyone to play at the conference. Then they run zero ads until release date when holy shit it is coming out.

MFW I am traveling tomorrow with family and I won't have a computer to play the game for three weeks.
>>
>>385038567
i'm more interested in how it affects party composition and the like

do you keep the exile that you've invested time, conversations, and stats in to have a better shot at winning additional rites, or do you keep him in the underworld with the possibility that you don't win and they never make it out
>>
>>385038343
Has a lot of potential, but it's going to depend on how it impacts story and gameplay that determines how good or bad the idea is.
>>
>>385038343
That looks interesting except for the fact that I will have to Intentionally lose fights to keep some party members with me.
>>
>>385039240

>>
>>385038067
I think that if they went for online multiplayer, a lot of time would have to be spent in balancing stuff. Also, maybe some of the skills would have to be cut because balance and fun are usually mutually exclusive.
>>
>>385039487
I think that's the point, do you keep your best bro who has won you countless rites knowing that if you lose the next one he might have to stay in limbo for the rest of his life or do you send him up for a job well done and lost your bro as well as your best party member.

>gender choice in game including a 'neither' option is vidya armageddon
From any other dev I'd be derisive right now, but I have confidence in Supergiant

I hate this SJW gender shit too but his reason seems totally understandable and is justified given the context.

Just like I said multiple times it's meant to make you choose between male, female and beast
>>
>>385042692
this. that's like complaining about genderless pokemon.
>>
>>385016481
So is this game co-op or..? I don't really feel like buying it since it's like 20 bucks and ps4 has some good sales right now, but I may pirate it for PC.
>>
>>385042256
it's a game that plays like a sport, you have a ball, and goals and shit.

>Pyre understands the primal thrill behind executing a dangerous slam dunk and the dueling probabilities of luck and dexterity necessary to make it happen. With Pyre, Supergiant Games' passion for systems-driven trials of skill and fondness for vibrant, wistful fantasy converge in the Mutant League NBA Jam daydream role-playing game I never knew I always wanted.

I'm really excited and already preordered. I loved both Bastion and Transistor, though Transistor beats out by a little due to the unique game mechanics and the story. I know I'm a casual
>>
>>385040220
That's a pretty good reply desu
>>
The pre-order promotion ends in 20 hours. That means it will only be released on the afternoon? I wish it was released at midnight, I won't be able to play it after ten in the morning.
Guess I will arrive 1 day late to the party.

Yeah, usual steam release time.

>Fallen London and Sunless sea give you over 10 options for what people in London or out at Zee will call you
>One option is even "Si- Er Mada-, er, yes!"
>When presented with a child, you can choose if you're the mother, father, or neither and you just found the kid on the street
>but /v/ throws a shitfit when a game with fucking monsters in it dares to think that someone might want to self insert as someone without a gender on the binary.
>>
>>385044886
>implying anyone complaining about the 3rd option actually plays video games

>no Logan Cunningham

Beast isn't a fucking gender
>>
>>385044886
Because FL/SS and Pyre are actually good games (at least I think Pyre is going to be good)
Most games that have multiple gender options are trash because most SJW's that make them don't actually know what good gameplay or good writing is
