No it has very few characteristics of a collectathon. The red coin and "five secrets" missions are the only ones where you collect things. In every other mission, the star plays the same role as the flag pole in the original Mario Bros.

It's both. I guess I would argue that SM64 only has Power Stars and maybe 8 Red Coins/100 coins as far as collectibles, but it set the standards for 3D platformers and allowed for Banjo Kazooie to debateably pushing the collecting way too fucking far
