That's what Saints Row/AssCreed/GTA etc all do, and look how much fun those are.
If you're going to crunch everything up, you need to seriously increase the amount of interesting things to do with things in the area, like a movie theater with actual movies on rotation and shit. Which isn't going to go down well with most people.
So instead getting a proper sense of scale is much better. Empty maps turn out to actually be bigger in potential than smaller maps with a billion post-it notes to collect.
Least of all you can add some non-linear missions like battles over larger areas, or user generated content with some room.

There was always stuff to interact with, though. Just because there isn't a hour long mission in between one tree and the boulder 30 feet away from it doesn't make it empty. If you just ran around from place to place without hunting animals, taming horses, collecting ingredients, killing enemies along the way, you're doing it wrong. Once progressed enough to not need to do that sort of stuff as often, you already have fast travel available, so what's the big idea? For every stable and village you visit, there's a side quest to discover. Hell, there's even NPC out on their own travels that have shit for you to do.

On the topic of enemies, even in BOTW you can get a hammer that has a massive amount of impact damage that sends them flying miles away if you need to bust through some tough enemies without actually bothering to fight them, but Stasis+ and an arrow do the same thing to boot. It's very easy to game it so you can travel freely, but for the most part you can literally just run away, besides Lynels, but you can see them coming up from miles away.
On the other hand, with GTA style cities there's always going to be cunts that start trouble or literally nothing outside of missions, either being a pain to deal with and often resulting in frustrating or time wasting, or you may as well have fast travelled.

Objectively not true.
Nigga immediately after the tutorial you get the option to use a Link amiibo and get Epona, and the entire scale of the world gets a shit ton smaller for getting shit done. There is a shit ton of detail everywhere, including in the placement of the terrain. What bullshit at the start? You don't have enough stamina to tame a giant horse? You can't pull the master sword? You can't climb in the rain around the Zora domain?

This isn't a case of wanting "bigger games", it's extremely easy to make a game as big as you want, just look at any of Star Citizen's dev logs; procedural gen and double floats will do it all in no time. The only problem you have is shit developers who port a game to all platforms - and this includes consoles that don't have any hardware for "unnecessary" things like decompressing audio, so you get 60+ fucking gig of data on EVERY platform regardless, even in fucking DOOM which is linear as hell. The type of idiocy that doesn't call out the Xbone and PS4 for the shit it is and say "this isn't suitable at all for a decent experience", which is oddly absent from Nintendo's offerings.
Every game bar BOTW is around about 1GB at most in size. BOTW itself is about a third of the size of any open world game, including ones boasting to be bigger in scale. And BOTW does not waste space in its world. So where the fuck are you getting these allegations?

When it's docked, it runs at a much higher clock speed. When it's not docked (i.e. handheld,) the clock speed is much slower. It's why I compared the docked power. As a handheld, it drops from 0.39 to 0.16 TF (weaker than the original xbox.)
