It's pretty early on into the Alpha stage at the moment, but I bought in and got the Mustang fighter package. There is a little exploration with some little chore-like missions to run and some stations to jog around in. Haven't tried the multiplayer or the fighter mode yet because my fighter is a buggy pos. Do not get the Maverick if you buy in... they are weeding out the bugs as they get them, but that ship in particular is dragging ass. Visuals are amazing, dog fighting is simplistic, missions are easy... but it's still just the Alpha. It'll come together nicely.

Consider it a pre-order for 2020. Despite whatever bullshit you hear on /v/, they are going along with development and you can check their weekly videos for progress.

At least we're getting a BIG patch (alpha 3.0) in the next couple months, so you'll have something to play.

As a "true believer" who has sunk over $80 into the game and actually does believe in it, I would say do not buy it right now. If you're on the fence then I would say the soonest it would be really worth buying in is when they finally release Squadron 42. They have plenty of money right now and I think you will be a lot happier if you wait until at least the single player campaign is feature complete.

I know there's a chance that I won't get a finished game back in return for my investment but that was a risk that I knew and was willing to take when I signed up for the Kickstarter. If you're not sure though, and you want something more finished that you can play right now, just get Elite Dangerous. It a less ambitious game than SC but it's perfectly payable right now and it's a lot of fun once you find people to play with and really get into it.

It's perfectly respectable to take the wait and see approach with SC and they don't need more money right now anyway-- what they need is time and to get something playable out that proves the game is getting closer to being feature complete. You're not really missing out on anything if you just wait.

It's going to be the best modern example of video game "bloatware".

The feature creep is going to murder this game.

This. It "may" get some decent content in 3.0 but at the very least wait until you can buy ships in-game before putting money down. The starters are currently busted ass and can't handle even basic dogfighting.
