Only thing about it that's "casualized" is fixing 1's design elements that were outdated by the time Crash 2 came out. You could maybe argue for how gems worked (though even that wasn't entirely excised thanks to colored gems) but the box counter and revamped save system? Nah, those were poorly implemented the first time around and Naughty Dog figured out why they were stupid very quickly.

Crash 2 and onwards has much better level design, but 1's levels being difficult doesn't mean they're unfair. The game almost always lets you wait and look for the right time to make a jump. Exceptions to this rule are obvious but the levels for those exceptions are simple and often telegraphed just enough where it's within the realm of reason.

Hit detection isn't 1:1 and the bridge levels in 1 make this obvious, but in 99% of levels it works fine.

Crash 1 and 2 are equal in my mind. Getting the gems in 2 was more fun and the slide jumps and nitros added to the experience. Crash 1's levels are more memorable both because they're challenging and because they were all the more satisfying to complete. Also the music in both were excellent.

Responding to OP it sounded like he got his shit kicked in by Crash 1 and decided to blame the level design instead of just accepting that the game isn't a walk in the park like Mario and that it was SUPPOSED to punish you for rushing or making an ill-timed jump.

they could have easily given it a better frame rate and more responsive controls. it is, after all, a platformer. timing is paramount in a platformer, and the game would be massively improved if the player were given more responsive controls.

i understand why they didnt make it good, though. i mean, why would you make a game good when you can make it shitty and cinematic? i always envisioned crash bandicoot to be a very filmic experience, and i'm glad that the original, twenty year old game wasn't improved because i'm a fucking half wit.

Crash 1 in the remake is much better than the original but i ain't doing no relic catching in 1. It made me hate 2 and 3 thanks to those fucking Jetpack, Jetski, Bike, Polar and Tiger levels fuck them. Fuck the Arab levels too and Cold Hard Crash. Fuck the Dino level and that stupid fucking Lava that i can't see coming because if i'm one second late i'll get a shitty relic.

Crash 1 has the longest fucking levels and the time diferences between Gold and Saphire is fucking ridiculous. I'm fine with 2 and 3 platinum.

DLC level was pretty neat and made Slipery Climb look easy.

Coincidentally Crash 1 has both the easiest and the hardest time trials on average. The levels are way more rigid so the time trial runs respect that. I didn't go for plat relics at all but I ended up platting nearly half the levels on first completed run because they were that lenient. THAT SAID, the longer levels can indeed be a pain in the ass. Took me hours to get a gold in fucking High Road and Stormy Ascent, and I hear the plats for levels like The Lab and Generator Room are downright insane.

The way I press it, which I feel is is probably very normal, is to extend my thumb just above the square button, and press. Just straight up. The button gets hit with the left side of my thumb and there's no chance of hitting the touchpad or the triangle button.

But even placing the center of my thumb on the options button, I still won't hit the touchpad.
Of course, my fingers are pretty long rather than wide.

I haven't really had issues with the hit detection outside of a couple of enemies/obstacles and the bridge levels where it's most notable. I think VV did a pretty good job with the remakes.
