The biggest thing that can stop this from doing really well among normies, which is obvious what this game is trying to do, is if the roster is really tine or sub 20. Normies love games with huge rosters, not even tenkaichi big, but something like MKX or Injustice 2. I'd think it'd only be enthusiast autists that would get upset about a small roster. Especially since pretty much all the mainstays from the anime that people remember are already there or nearly inevitable (Tien, 18, etc.) People that are obscure movie character X or no buy are in threads like this and not really among the "normie" audience. If it's not popular it's because it has the same failing as all other fighting games in that you need to sink a lot of time into them to get an idea of what you're doing. Many (including me) will be inspired to climb that wall, but it's still not going to be anywhere near as successful as pickup and play DBZ simulators.

Big pro/con is that each game has a shitload of core systems that give you benefits in both offensive and defensive play. There are a bunch of little things to take in, but that variety of options means you have the more ways to push back against pressure or pile on more pressure. Put up a stronger defense with both Barrier and just-guarding to avoid chip damage and reduce your blockstun, break out of combos and counterattacks, spend your meter in a number of ways for multiple cancels, unblockables, etc.

Inputs for the basics are surprisingly lenient and you'll usually be able to learn to execute a lot of your character's bread and butter things easily. There's also a lot of flexibility when it comes to combos, you don't need to do the same shit over and over.

You'll find that compared to something like SF or KOF, most attacks are actually slower in GG or BB. For example, the startup of fast normals in SF are in the 2-to-5 frame range. A fast normal in BB is usually around six frames, rarely lower. This carries on to bigger attacks, a heavy attack in BB ends up taking a lot longer than a heavy normal in SF. Comparatively, GG/BB goes with slightly slower but further reaching attacks, and gives characters a lot more mobility and movement speed. The slower attacks help with being able to track the action and gives you wider windows for inputs.

In contrast to the easy inputs, there are more complex actions that need tight execution, especially if you want to get into jump cancel combos of any significant length. Not too big a deal given the combo damage reduction is pretty steep, it's mostly for style points.

The design of ArcSys fighting games is "put in as many systems as possible so players have options for any situation." It usually ends up working, the many options both in the game system and in each character's moves giving way to a much greater freeform diversity in playstyles.

Well obviously we can't expect Tenkaichi size roster in an Arcsys game. The Tenkaichi games managed to have a roster the size that they have by reentlessly re-using character animations, super moves and other assets for multiple characters to save time and money. You can't get away with that in a 2D fighter without people complaining and Arcsys don't do that in their games.

Frankly 30 fighters would be fantastic, like I said, it just needs to hit that 20 fighter benchmark to avoid being niche. If it's more than 20 fighters I think it will be fine.

Yeah, I think the game has a lot of crossover appeal, and you're going to get a lot of different people playing it.... in the FGC. But casuals who like Dragon Ball have six thousand other games they can play. I still play Tenkaichi 3 with my boys when we're bored. DBFZ is going to launch with, like, 16 characters in a tag game. That's already a really fucking small number in general, but add it to a tag game and it's straight up pathetic. This is what I said before, DBFZ is a cool concept but it really needs to launch with a bigger roster than Arcsys is generally known for if it's going to be successful.

The problem is that DBFZ is different than other DBZ fighters because it's 2D. Each fighter has to have a unique feel and playstyle using this format so designing a large roster of characters becomes quite hard to do. Games like the Tenkaichi series have such massive rosters by copy-pasting many of their animations for things like movement, basic attacks and even super moves, which is something DBFZ simply can't do because it's designed using a more serious fighting game format that requires characters to feel unique and mechanically different.

As a Tenkaichi 3 fanboy myself I love this game because the roster is so small. This game has potential to set itself apart and add diversity to dbz games.

Arcsys has traditionally made terrible rank schemes. New players have to be able to find sets with other new players if you want the game to actually get popular.

As bad as the game is, SFV has come the closest to a functioning rank system. They're still trying to roll their own dumb rating algorithm instead of using a standard one developed for chess, but it's better than SF4's was. They still have no means to search lobbies by skill rating. But it works okay overall. Arcsys has had nonsensical rating systems where you can do nothing but lose and still rank up and backwards gameable matchmaking.

There are plenty of people who still defend Capcom's fighting games for free, both inside and outside competitive, altough the competitive ones are likely to get paid for it, yes. It is just how things tend to go down, see SFV, it is shit and even pro players hate it, but it still gets all the attention due to brand name alone, no matter how good the competition is, it will always go back to Capcom because they are that dominant in the FG market.
