Monster Hunter is a bad example because it's literally a game that's hardly changed over its iterations (until recently).
But take something like Final Fantasy. With 15 mainline games over 3 decades, there's all sorts of differences between them and it's entirely possible that someone who liked, say, FF6 might not like FF12 or vice versa.

There are hardly any other game series with more than 6 numbered entries and FF main gimmick is how much it changes from game to game.
