Replaying 2033 in this Redux version on PC, it honestly aged really badly. I can barely feel any improvement in this ""remake"" honestly.

But it's still good and Last Night is even better.

You should read the books but you don't have to. The original author worked with the devs to make the game.
Last Light is an original story by the original author though, so that's not in the novel sequel to 2033
