I feel that Quake has become a victim of its own success these days. The multiplayer component was so massively played and praised that it shifted the general perception of Quake away from being anything other than a multiplayer game. Combine that with the potentially greater revenue from microtransactions and shit and a Quake reboot being based around multiplayer feels like it was inevitable.

doom 2016 mp was never great but as a modern and arena style hybrid, it had its moments. latest update pretty much ruined most of the competitive aspects. most modes had very little depth already, team deathmatch being an example of a brain dead spam mode. but now the map control aspect is significantly less interesting than before since the powerups are all called out before they spawn as of the latest update, so timing and positioning for them is less important now. they also jumped the shark with retarded always-on perks that give unnecessarily powerful advantages that lower the skill cap, remove depth, and seriously hurt game balance. basically, don't bother, unless you're looking for a casual or social multiplayer FPS experience
