Different guy but I wouldn't say anti-hero. She definitely wasn't a typical hero, though. Her fortune was made by selling artifacts and writing stories about her adventures. It wasn't so much about getting rich but mainly as a means to fund her expeditions.

Her parents never died but disowned her because of her lifestyle. Her father was some lord, not a famous explorer like later iterations. (At least if I'm remembering right from the game manuals.)

All in all, I always got the impression that her saving the world was less about virtues and more about it being in the way of her adventure. Obviously, much of this doesn't make her likable which is why I assume they changed it for the movie and in later games.

She was a good character, before marketers seized creative control and turned Lara into a mindless bimbo who shoots anyone in her way. The series' original creators never intended for Lara to be hashed out like this, but the series' publisher wasn't convinced that TR could be marketed without sex appeal.

The Crystal Dynamics reboot (the first one, back in 2006) gave Lara an actual personality. Too bad the reboot spanned only three games, though.

It's a shame this thread dissolved into waifu posting so quickly. This is exactly why good franchises are ruined by marketers injecting themselves into the creative process to pander to the lowest common denominator.

Original Lara was just eye-candy, then the Legends/Anniversary/Underworld games tried to give her a less psychopathic motivation, half-ripped from the films, and she suddenly had a little depth. I mean, she went from being a sheer American Psycho sociopath to just "MAY PARENTS ARE DEAD" Dark Knight, but it was better than nothing.
Plus, I kinda like the idea of a spoiled inheritance kid burning their money on adventures instead of investing it in anything. The idea of an old woman Lara being like an old man Aleister Crowley (aka: broke and dejected, but with lots of interesting stories to tell and an underestimated influence over others) makes me moist.
Hopefully, if they do another installment into nuRaider's universe, it'll bringer closer to her lager-than-life origin and drop the "I can do it!" fragility.
