Rosalina was actually popular to begin with and Nintendo was just clumsy at reacting to the fact that a mainline Mario character was capable of developing a fanbase.
In both cases, their actual 'hate' was mostly just amplified autism spouted by autists who hate new characters, and particularly those who liked the Koopalings and Daisy respectively.

The actual Mario example is Yoshi, who to this day is used to push garbage games nobody wants, and unlike the two characters you mentioned had a shitload of games planned around him before he was even popular. Rosie and BJ can't even consistently get into spin-offs in comparison.
