I played it on max settings at 1440p on a 980ti and got 50 fps through most of it, and experienced an occasion stutter when new things popped in as I moved through the world.

Not entirely true. On Hard, most enemies will one shot you. The different auto-use chips will determine this, and your maximum health. After the intro when you have a few health and better auto-use chips, way less enemies will one shot you. They'll still take a lot of HP out but it won't kick you to game over. The prologue is just the casual filter for the game, I once spent 6 hours trying to beat it on Hard and could not do it. I would always get far enough to fight the final boss but I'd inevitably get one shot, even without having used a single healing item or salve up to that point.

The best way to play is go do the prologue on normal then flip it to hard afterwards. I am convinced it's impossible to do the beginning on hard. I really sat down for 6 straight hours and attempted it.

People make fun of genuine anime fans all the time.
