So, pic related is coming out soon and it got me interested, but as it is a very old franchise and remakes/ports are everywhere I wonder where should I start. Does it need to be played in order at all? What titles should I avoid at first if I'm a casualfag or which ones should I go right into if I enjoy a challenge.

Basically any of them are good to start with except for Ys II (which is basically the second half of Ys I) and Ys V (not because of story but because it's probably the worst in the series). All you really need to know is that Adol fucking loves adventure and his life partner Dogi loves to crush walls. They all have difficulty options so they can be as easy or as hard as you want really.

Just realized that didn't really give you a good place to start. Ys I and II (Steam/GOG or PSP) if you don't mind the battle system being weird, Oath in Felghana if you do. You could also just jump into 8 if you want, it's pretty self contained except for one character from a previous game who doesn't really end up mattering.

Weird battle system? I thought it was something Zelda-like

I fucking love Ys! I want to cum on Dana's belly!

Ys I, II, and the original two versions of IV had the "bump" system where you have to run into enemies at an angle to damage them. If you run into them head on you take damage too. It takes some getting used to at first but it's pretty fun.
