Why was Thief 1 so much better than Thief 2?
When did it all go so wrong?
>>
It wasn't so much better, it was slightly better, because it had more mission variety and the missions were designed to fit the story, not the other way round.

Both are still leagues ahead of every other stealth game.
>>
I actually liked II more, little more forgiving with undead and non-human levels.
>>
>>384780151
>more forgiving
>turrets and security cams everyfuckingwhere
>robots that shoot bombs at you
>tiny bitchbots that trigger the entire map of your presence

And worst of all
>metal floors fucking everywhere
>>

Bots are the easiest thing in the world to hear coming, Cameras are literally just area denial. You chucklenuts know you can lean around corners, right?
>>
TLG listened to casuals who complained about muh unkillable zombies

Thief 1
>what if a creepy prison full of loons located underneath an abandoned mine full of monsters?
>what if an ancient tomb full of traps and a magical relic that emits sound and guides you through the place?
>what if a house of Chaos God where laws of physics go crazy. He laughs and mocks you as you hopelessly try to navigate your way through the place?
>what if a citadel of mages, each of them worshipping their own element?
>what if an undercover mission as you infiltrate a cult of Order fanatics and still their artifacts?
>what if a lush opera house, you get it to mess with borguise, on the way there you meet a wacky maddened signer who performs for you
>what if haunted cathedral in which undead roam freely, you must perform the ritual of exorcism and blow up the gate to get out

Thief 2
>so, um, there are mansions, made of metal
>they're all square
>>
>>384782893
Thief 2
>What if we left out the shitty levels from 1 and focused on the good ones

Both are the greatest games of all time. Contenders are Deus Ex and UT 99. Late 90's and early 2000'
s will never be matched.
>>
Thief 1 has better atmosphere and plot.
Thief 2 has better gameplay.

It just depends on what you prefer. They're both fantastic.
>>
>>384780895
No, they just realized that there was an audience for pure stealth so they didn't need to put in monsters.
>>
>>384783115
But the gameplay nearly identical? I'd argue that T1 had better gameplay because the levels had more verticality and rope arrows were actually useful.
>>
>>384783409
Rope arrows were really good in some T2 missions but I guess I see what you mean.

I think T2 had the better 'pure stealth' gameplay. Even your comment highlights the more platformy aspects of Thief 1 and not the sneakan.

I suppose level design is more appropriate since your right, the core stealth mechanics are identical.

1 is only better if you consider innovation important (as you should), but if you value games in a vacuum, without accounting its context (which is, of course, unfair, but more useful to find more enjoyable games, instead of making good criticism), 2 is better in every way.

Saying it went so wrong is going too far. Thief 1 simply has greater level variety and bigger focus on the weird supernatural elements of the world
>>384786207
>2 is better in every way
No it's not. It changes up the enemies a bit. It changes the focus away from the supernatural and instead focuses almost completely on mansion/cathedral robbing. Its levels range in quality, same as the first game.
>>
>>384786738
But with more action.

Hammerites are unironically cool guys, if even they tend to LARP a bit too much. Reading their religious texts makes you like them, which seems intentional since in Strange Bedfellows you help them out. In also fits with the idiotic psalms of the mechanists, who represent the perversion of The Builder's cult.

Thief 2 was more about thieving, but less charming. Both are great.
>>
>>384788630
>Thief 2 was more about thieving
Mathematically wrong. Every single mission in Thief 1 up until last four have loot requirements, in Thief 2 has very few such missions at all. You're always doing some dumb shit instead, like framing a police officer, tracing a courier, or building beacon parts. Fuck, even the mission where you break inside a BANK has no loot requirement.
>>
>>384779986

Thief 2 is objectively better.
>>
Just finished up Thief 2 last night.
While Thief 1 was definitely a fresher experience, Thief 2 seemed to push the limits of the dark engine with its huge levels (although as everyone pointed out, they did tend to blend together).

The thing that really pissed me off was Casing the Joint and Masks back to back. God what a mess

Is there actually a level in Thief 2 bigger than The Maw of Chaos? Dark Project levels always felt bigger to me not in the least because of the swiss cheese design. Every room connect to 5 other rooms and some secret entrances. Metal Age was way simpler in that sense
>>
>>384779986
Nothing went wrong because they're both good games.
>>
>>384792337
I'm not absolutely sure since it has been a while since I have played Thief 1 but Sabotage at Soulforge, life of the party, Cargo, and kidnap seemed huge to me.
>>
>>384793062
Dude Kidnap is literally just gimped Lost City. I don't think Sabotage is bigger than The Maw, although they're built differently - Soulforge is about backtracking, while Maw is mostly linear. Life of the Party is freaking tiny, which is reasonable since you have to track back the entire level. Still the best level though for variety alone.
>>
>>384783285
So many people get tricked by the barks if they aren't "WHAT WAS THAT"
I really wonder how would Thief 3 by LGS running on Siege Engine would've ended up like.

T2 is also a lot more lax with Invisibility Potions and Frogbeast Eggs. All in all, both games have the ever useful Flash bomb.
>>
>>384788042
They're pretty cool, but also fanatically ruthless, reading some of the verses
Garrett said it best.
>>
>>384779986

TFW no true Thief 3 will ever be made.
>>
>>384795263
I remember being stuck there as well. Crank up the brightness to the max and start checking every pixel
>>
>>384795568
Nah. This is my second playthrough and I had the same problem first time as well. I think I just go to Mage's Tower with less money.
>>
>>384795263
I feel you, I will never understand how people can enjoy a level where the loot is all over the place and it feels like you are searching through the trash
The exploration was good, but the high loot objective makes no sense
