Why are most games these days sequels / remakes / remasters of existing franchises?

Because companies need to earn money.

Because everything has been done, but also, video games use to be a niche little hobby for nerds, but now they have become popular with normies so companies don't give a fuck about making something new or interesting or even good and finished, all they want now is your money. That's why you have all the DLCs, kickstarters, early accesses, preorders and whatever else.

Because innovation involves risk. Why try something new when people are guaranteed to spend money on the old?
