The difference is sexualized Samus and action Samus were kept separate. Suit removal was always post-mission in a position of safety. The only time you saw bikini Samus in a hazardous environment was in the NES game where it was a non-canon easter egg.
The Zero Suit is more awkward because it shoves elements counterproductive to extraneous labor into said laborious context and demands suspension of disbelief.
