Questing is typical fetch shit. Story starts out slow and takes a long time to pick up, then it's decent. Don't play if you have a low tolerance for repetitive tasks.

Quests are the worst I've ever seen in a big name MMO.

The delay in actions, forced dismount talking to NPCs, and spotty clicking of items that you're constantly inspecting/picking up makes it very hard to enjoy.

Storywise, ARR is pretty eh up till the late part. I like that you start in a different city depending on your starting class and you befriend a different scion/scions due to the difference in location.

HW is mostly good. Expect a bit of facepalming when it comes to the DRG dude making asshat decisions.

Haven't finished SB yet but I've enjoyed the story so far. Muh mhigger gets a bit annoying, but the Doma stuff is good.

Not that I expect to convince you to come back or excuse it, but the combat at low levels is pretty fuckin terrible on like... almost every class. Essentially once you hit 30 and get a jobstone, most jobs become have the core toolset of their class and become mildly fun, and it's uphill from there.

Pugilist is the only class that kinda gets to be okay quickly, as it gets its core combo system by like level 8.

Quests are mostly very generic. You may enjoy them just for the sake of learning more about the world but they don't have you doing anything interesting gameplay wise. For story, let's see...

ARR is kinda in the middle. The story isn't terrible but the writing is incredibly padded and you will most likely find it to be a slog unless you are immediately really interested in the setting and wanting to learn everything about the world. The best things about it in my opinion are Gaius who is a pretty good villain and the buildup to Heavensward because some real shit goes down.

Heavensward is just fucking great. Shitty characters fuck off, great new ones are introduced, you get to go on a genuine adventure to unseen mystical lands and the bros you are traveling with make for a fantastic dynamic of characters. The pacing is way WAY better and genuine feels will be had. I get goosebumps from thinking back on Heavensward's story, at least for the Dragonsong War part, I just loved it so much. I don't really want to say much more, just know that it is a big improvement from ARR.

And then we have Stormblood which is just a piece of shit. For the villains we can throw understandable goals and motivations right out of the window. Fuck charisma too, no one needs that. Let's just have a fucking cartoon villain that masturbates to "hate" and the "thrill of combat", that's SO badass! So evil! It'll be the best villain ever! I let my 12 year old son write this villain! But the bad guys aren't the only shitty characters. Lyse is perhaps even worse. The main gal of the expansion is the most vapid, poorly developed, useless fucking cunt that could possibly have dragged herself along with you throughout Stormblood.

I was about to go into a massive rant about this but I'm running out of text so TLDR: ARR is okay, you may like it or hate it, HW is great, if you don't like it you're shit, and SB fucking blows.

I've been leveling some jobs in the free trial and I have to ask to be sure: Is the "Equip Recommended Gear" option retarded? It worked well enough when I was leveling a WHM since mo' mind = mo' healing and getting hit isn't in the job description, but it seems kind of out of whack with WAR gear. It'll recommend some shit I was using while leveling my healer over heavy armor because the lighter gear has literally one more point of vitality, even if the defense is far inferior. I'm not sure if the system is retarded or I am but I can't see it being worth it.

(From Church up to Castrum rescuing, HW until Y'shtola Retrival)

Alphinaud is practically the second main character, even when he is "written out" in SB he is still very relevant and involved.

It's alright. It does nothing special. All items are boring, zero procs on any weapons to make them stand out in any way. Basic tab target hit 50 buttons combat.

The story is alright though, it might be fun to play through it just to follow that.
The quests are really shit though no doubt about it. I think out of all big MMOs I ever played, FFXIV has the least inspired quests by far. At least other MMOs sometimes had some fun ones, here it's a never ending chain of kill x bears, collect 5 ears, walk into this purple circle to spawn enemies and kill them. There is zero creativity.

My only real complaint with the sidequests is that, if they're going to add so many and keep making them worth only like 1/75th of a level, they reeeeaaaaallllly need to give people access to flying earlier. I'm not saying to remove aether currents but I like to prune sidequests as they pop up and this game makes me leave them all until the MSQ bids me to move on (when they give you the final quest current).

I mean, AOE's still strong, and mass pulls still speed up dungeons a lot. Castrum Abania's pretty bad about gating you before the 2nd boss, but the rest of the dungeons certainly benefit from large pulls if your dps isn't fucking retarded.

Most the dungeons basically come down to double pull > double pull > boss, with some exceptions allowing you to full pull between bosses, like between boss 1 and 2 in Ala Mhigo, or 1 and 2 in Shisui.

If it's your first time, you don't know the healer, and you don't know the dungeon, and you aren't super confident about your abilities - just fuckin single pull. If it's early into content's lifecycle I'll ask a DF healer if they're cool with full pulls, and if they're cool it's go-time full speed.

If it's something everyone should know, the healer has alright gear and doesn't have a sprout icon, I will double/full pull without hesitation. Worst case scenario we die and take it a little slower afterwards.

Start with a double see how the healer/dps acts, then adjust accordingly.

and there are situations where it might be better to do single just so the shit that needs to die fast will die fast, like when BEEEEEEEEESSSSSS FINARU STINGU is involved, it might be stunnable, but stuns have their own draw backs, Shield Bash got low frame of you actually pulling it off since it is on GCD, and the kick enjoys its cooldown making it that if a second+ Bee casts FS before it finishes you are fucked.

It might be babbys first tank buster, but it is a deadly bee weapon worth respecting, not that you really ever get the opportunity to pull THAT many Bees.

i found SB to be the best so far, i found the ala mhigan resistance (Lyse, in particular, to be very well written, voiced, and very likable personalities!) i loved the Doman cast, as well!

i can't wait to see where it goes from here, this is the first time since 1.0 i've been invested in the story. HW almost got me there, but not quite, ARR bored me to death.

Yeah you can sufficiently level any job in the game without detriment. Once you reach level 15 you can head to any of the city-states and pick a job at will.
3 jobs are locked behind the HW expansion and 2 behind SB though.

Once you've done the level 10 class quest for the class you choose, you can go to any of the ARR class guilds and unlock that class at level 1, and all you have to do to swap between them is swap your weapon.
For HW jobs, you need to have done all of the ARR content (and so be level 50 on at least one job) and they start at 30.
For SB, they relaxed this, so you only need one job at level 50, regardless of your main story progression. You don't even need to have finished the ARR stuff, let alone the HW stuff. These ones start at 50.

Yes, they become jobs but the gameplay stays the same and your skills just progress from there.
Just play the game and things should come naturally to you.

I main dragoon actually, but after the simplification of jobs all around, monk is middle-tier. Bard is certainly a lot easier now, Summoner is as easy as ever, Dragoon was dumbed-down significantly, etc.

How does the story and combat hold up to ESO or pre-expac GW2?

Story in ESO was okay to pretty good once I came to terms with the fact that things are watered down for the mainstream crowd and served more as an hook for people to look up lore.

Dungeons and raids are really solid, game offers pleanty of challanging and rewarding content. The story quests are TEDIOUS AS FUCK though, and there are MOUNTAINS of story quests which pretty much all suck (200 in the vanilla game alone).

After you finish story and hit 50 is when the game gets good, pic related. Also, you should only have to put up with the shitty story quests once, since every character and be every class, theres no reason to make another character
