It's one thing if we're talking about content that's been out for over a year, but if you just spent $20+ on something and then the next week it's announced that it's free I think you're justified to some kind of reimbursement.

Obviously everyone in this scenario is in the wrong, the customer for supporting bad corporate habits and the company for doing this so recently after the content's release (assuming there's NO attempt at reconciliation).

When you buy a game you're paying for it as it is, in its existing state, with nothing being promised to you other than "it's a game". If the game goes on sale, you're not obligated to get the money back. If it goes free, you're not obligated to get the money back. Is it in good taste for a company to compensate you? Fuck yeah, more companies should do it, especially if it's a recent purchase. But they don't actually have to give you anything, not unless they explicitly said "we are going to compensate you if things change in the future". If making sure you're not "gambling" is a big deal, and you don't know if you'll be adequately compensated or not, then don't buy the fucking product. It's as simple as that.

When you buy a "new car", you're being promised well, a new fucking car. If it's not, then you should be guaranteed your money back.

When you buy a new game, you're not being promised anything except a "good game", and if it's not good then you, at least under Steam, have the option to refund it for full price. To be fair the runes didn't really add any serious depth to the game. It was generally agreed that they were just a cheap way of trying to add an artificial "depth" through pregame statboosts so Rito could force you to spend more IP/RP on pages and the like.
