I did the latter. It was a completely optional and was able to be missed thing. Just like the burning Elf house, if you don't do it early on, she burns to death. I think I missed another one of those events in the bottom corner, since when I arrived there was just dead bodies and the quest auto completed. It sucked. So much stuff you can miss.
