Your choice is to either be an enginefag or a gamedev. Even if you're a NEET who dedicates 12 hours a day to it, you'll only be able to do one or the other. Trying to do both is a recipe for disaster and a perpetual early access game.

These days, make an engine and sell it (or give it away free). Barely anyone has an in-house engine anymore because it's so easy to grab something like Unity, UDK or Gamebryo and get cracking.
However, even if you aren't going to sell it writing a custom engine is a great thing to have on your resume for just about any programming-based job. It shows that you really know your shit and can focus on complex tasks.

I hear ya OP. My parents keep pushing for me to get a degree at a 3d modeling course at a college when I just plan to work freelance anyways.
